@119 That paragraph is so ridiculously naive that I don't even know what to start. I did not choose Psych because its an easy out, I chose it because I think the human mind is fascinating, and whether you choose to believe it or not, a solid understanding of psychology ( not just some intro classes) is extremely helpful in just about any career. Also, isn't it a bit contradictory to say that psych is an "easy out" and then turn around and say that you won't go anywhere with it? Me not wanting to know what I do in life does not reflect upon my intelligence. Have you taken any actual upper division psychology classes? Because last time I checked neuroscience and psycho biology were not joke classes. I also am pretty sure neuroscientists earn a decent amount of pay. I'm not the one trying to act like I'm better than anyone else, please point to one part of my post where I said anything like that? I'll be the first to admit that engineering or maybe business would have been a good choice for a major if I didn't give a shit about being happy in life and doing something I actually enjoyed, and instead obsessed over what my starting salary would be out of school. But I happen to have bigger long term goals, and I realize that for the career path I want to follow, my degree( which is ultimately just a peace of paper) won't mean anywhere near as much as the connections I make and working hard at the internships I hold. and don't even get me started on business majors...you want to talk about people who don't know what they want to do with life? people choose business because they know they want to make money but aren't smart enough to make it in a field where they would actually contribute something meaningful to society I don't feel like even responding to your last statement so I'll be brief and just say my goals are not to merely " get a job" in those fields.
oh..and..
@#129 All the neruoscience majors I know have intentions of going to med school and becoming neurosurgeons. A run of the mill neuroscience degree like many other degrees isn't worth any more than some other bio degree. They're all pretty much worthless unless you go on- to med school, or something else. And for the record, I am a Human Bio degree with an emphasis on Genetics and Biotechnology. I love my major, I think it is really interesting, but I realize that I've still got a ways to go before my schooling will be worth anything.
@#132 I realize that, my point was just that the degree isn't worthless/easy and does require intelligence.
@ Staywhatyouare I realize that this is going nowhere fast for the intents and purposes of this particular thread, so I'll make this quick. I never once insulted the intelligence of a Psych major, nor did I say that it was worthless. The fact that you manifested those thoughts, probably points to your own underlying insecurities with your major. That being said pretty much every college major takes a degree of intelligence, but the fact of the intelligence being present does not take away from the fact that the major has limited applications in the world unless you carry it on to a PhD.
I would just like to add my own two cents, even though most people probably won't even care or see it. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who is defending the study of psychology, which concerns perception, memory, behavior, identity, and a variety of other disciplines. I graduated only two days ago with a degree in psychology and I couldn't be prouder. I pursued psych because I was genuinely interested in it, and I was happy to take classes. I had a high GPA and did a thesis project. Secondly, it is understandable that many people consider psychology to be an easy subject. And of course there are going to be slackers who are satisfied to graduate with C's and goof off after graduating. But don't you find people like that in every major? Not everyone gets an A... Thirdly, I can think of a ton of other degrees that seem "useless". To name a few: English History Anthropology Sociology Anthropology Philosophy the "studies"--women's studies, Asian studies, Jewish studies, etc. Communications Any language if you don't intend to teach/interpret It all depends on your point of view. One person views psychology as useless, but the other may view it as a great stepping stone for future endeavors. No major is "easy". All of them require at least a minimal amount of effort and completing a psych major usually requires statistics, which is not easy to learn! Lastly...most of us are having time finding jobs now. Only one of my friends has a solid job lined up right now, and the rest of us will just have to deal with what we're given. But I don't have any doubt that sooner or later I will find one, and after that continue to grad school---for psychology! My congratulations to you and your friend, OP...let's not be downhearted. We have college diplomas, at least!
I agree with Staywhatyouare. No one is denying that further education past an undergraduate is probably a good idea, but that is true for most degrees these days. Thats because people are getting more intelligent over the years, and more people are going to university. (Flynn effect, anyone?) Also, I don't buy into this BS that everyone should know what they want to do by the time they start university... I didn't know until my second year of university, and I know people that still aren't sure. Oh, and there is more to intelligence than IQ scores and books. I respect anyone that follows a career path they're truly interested in, and works hard to make an impact in that field. Psychology is one of the areas responsible for advances in finding cures for disorders such as Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers. It's pretty ignorant for people to just generalise the whole group, and insult their intelliegence or importance in society.
Getting a Bachelor's in psych, stopping, then assuming you can do psych work is analogous to someone getting a Bachelor's in biology and assuming you can get a job as a surgeon. You need to keep going! Also because so many people get a Bachelor's in psychology makes the degree more worthless (supply and demand anyone?). Any drunk sorority chick can pass through it. I know psych majors who partied at LEAST five nights a week their junior year, would ditch classes for weeks at a time, and still get straight A's! Unbelievable. If you want to go through undergrad and expect to get a job immediately afterwards try going for business or engineering.

Unless you're going beyond a four-year degree, psych is useless. This shouldn't surprise you as more psych degrees are handed out than any other concentration last time I checked.
You have to be willing to move where the job is. If you aren't willing to move, then yeah..you might end up there. I knew astrophys' and microbiologists working in an inking factory because they couldn't find jobs in the area.
