Bad omen

Today, my friend Kate and I were helping build a playground. Halfway through, a construction worker asked where we go to school. I told him we graduated and proudly held degrees in Psych. The construction worker stopped mid-dig, glanced at us sadly, and said, "Yeah, that's what my degree is in too." FML

Unless you're going beyond a four-year degree, psych is useless. This shouldn't surprise you as more psych degrees are handed out than any other concentration last time I checked.

You have to be willing to move where the job is. If you aren't willing to move, then yeah..you might end up there. I knew astrophys' and microbiologists working in an inking factory because they couldn't find jobs in the area.

@ #109 Just because you picked a "well rounded" major doesn't mean anything. People who chose majors other than psych actually know what they want to do in life. You just chose Psych because it's an easy degree that gives you easy outs in life. Chose something that's actually worth doing. If you want to do business, do that, but I guarantee you, side-by-side, a company would rather take the business major over the psych major. The only thing Psych gives you is a piece of paper that means you are "well rounded" and don't have a sharp enough point to get a job. Don't try to act like you're better because you're "well rounded." So yeah, if you do choose Psych, prepare yourself to be doing something else unless you want to go to school to get your PhD. Oh and anybody can get a job in the political, music, or writing fields, just look at some of the politicians of today!

1. Many construction workers do very well, and it's a perfectly respectable job. 2. Let's not kid ourselves, psych isn't exactly known for being a challenging or particularly useful major unless you get a phd 3. my degree is in biomedical engineering and i'm working retail right now because i needed a change of pace for a little while and i love my job. 4. FYL for being so ignorant

haha, to #13, I have achieved a high school diploma and a BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Moleceular Biology and I am STILL going to say that they didn't do enough in college to get good jobs. Very few employers even want someone with a psych degree and they may as well have gotten a liberal arts degree. Oh well, doesn't matter physical labor is fun and I do it as a hobby in my spare time....after making a killing with something that an employer is looking for

Lol, psyc majors make me laugh... There's not much room in the job world for anyone who's not either a Business Management Degree with some good internships under their belt, or an Engineer... (Not Enviro E that's BS) and even with a BS in that, you have to have some good experience behind it as well. So... liberal arts and natural sciences... power to you, you'll need it.

Congrats on your degree in basket weaving. :)

I really don't think that Kate wants everyone to know about the most discouraging and embarrasing thing that's happened to her recently. Just saying.

haha i just read this a day after my o.chem teacher went on a 20 minute rant about how pysch is a major for people who can't do anything else

I'm going to have to go with the people saying that plenty of undergrad degrees are useless these days without post-grad degrees as well. My undergrad is in sociology, and lo and behold after my 3rd year, my naïve self finally realized that sociology, while interesting, is quite useless without a master's or Ph.D. ...thus, my master's degree. Oh BUT, to have already graduated without realizing this? Wow. That stinks.

he was probably saying that with some sarcasm
