Bad omen

Today, my friend Kate and I were helping build a playground. Halfway through, a construction worker asked where we go to school. I told him we graduated and proudly held degrees in Psych. The construction worker stopped mid-dig, glanced at us sadly, and said, "Yeah, that's what my degree is in too." FML

Unless you're going beyond a four-year degree, psych is useless. This shouldn't surprise you as more psych degrees are handed out than any other concentration last time I checked.

You have to be willing to move where the job is. If you aren't willing to move, then yeah..you might end up there. I knew astrophys' and microbiologists working in an inking factory because they couldn't find jobs in the area.

I am very surprised at how many people are bashing psychology. It may be funny to you now but when you need an effective therapy or are feelin depressed you may think differently. Plus psych is not just about emotion and therapy, a lot of research focuses on memory, perception and learning, all things that are just as complex as any science or math. The only bad thing is that a PhD is necessary because a lot of people just fall back on psych when they dont know what to do.

A psych degree = do you want fries with that? Sorry, but in this economy, you should've known better then to pick a major with a shit chance of getting a job.

Yea, I’m going to have to disagree with all the people saying Psych is a useless major. I chose psychology as a major because I’m in college and am still not sure what I want to do and have very broad interests, therefore I chose a major with wide applications that would allow me to branch into just about anything I want down the road. Psychology gets to the fundamentals of why people act the way they do on various levels, and studying it gives you a much greater understanding of the human mind. The things that I’m learning will help me out tremendously whether I choose to go into business, law, writing, music industry, politics, or any other of the various things that interest me. I just got a paid internship (as I’m sure most college students know is fairly difficult right now) in marketing and my studies in psych are one of the reasons they were initially interested in me. Any other major I chose would’ve limited me to a certain career path, but with a background in psych I’m keeping my possibilities wide open. Sure to some kid that just wants to graduate from college with straight C’s and a degree and has no ambition beyond that, psych is a useless major. But the motivated study of psychology, and a firm grasp of its concepts rather than just skating by and getting a degree, is something that is just as challenging as any other major. Oh and saying that psych is useless without post graduate studies is a stupid argument.....the same can be said for a majority of undergrad majors at this point.

wow that's sad when you need a phD in order to even stand out in the field. I've noticed this about a lot of the liberal arts :( Congrats but good luck getting your phD.

I definitely have to agree with #109... and just because you get an undergraduate degree in some field doesn't mean you have to continue with that field. I started out as a psych degree and I had ambitions to continue doing schooling for 10 more years and become a psychologist... but halfway through my 4 year experience, I realized that the occupation wasn't for me. Although I didn't have time to change my major, I continued taking Spanish courses, minoring in Spanish and education, and gaining experience through internships so I could do what I finally realized I want to do: teach Spanish. I believe Spanish is a beautiful language and I enjoy bringing knowledge to others in a creative manner. I'm now graduating and heading over to another college so I could begin to obtain my teaching credential. An undergraduate degree does not necessarily tell you what you have to do in life, and I wish good luck to the OP in her future career, whether in psychology or not.

deserve it cause degrees in psych are fuggin stupid.

#88, let me guess... You're a psych major? You do realize that there are other majors where it's easier to get a job after you graduate that pay better than $70k with only a B.S. right? The problem is, these majors (engineering mainly) are much harder than psychology. Psychology classes are a popular choice for 'easy classes' for us engineers.

To add to my previous comment: That is not to say I have anything against psychology majors. It was my second choice for a degree coming into school, but I can't afford to spend the 6-8+ years in school and still doubt whether or not jobs will be available even when the economy is good. It is definitely an interesting field, with a lot of options, but supply and demand plays a huge factor in everything and demand is extremely low.

And this belongs on FMylife because? Go to college. You get a real job right out of school, in the field you went to school for and not just a piece of paper that says that you did four years of essays.
