Bad omen

Today, my friend Kate and I were helping build a playground. Halfway through, a construction worker asked where we go to school. I told him we graduated and proudly held degrees in Psych. The construction worker stopped mid-dig, glanced at us sadly, and said, "Yeah, that's what my degree is in too." FML

Unless you're going beyond a four-year degree, psych is useless. This shouldn't surprise you as more psych degrees are handed out than any other concentration last time I checked.

You have to be willing to move where the job is. If you aren't willing to move, then yeah..you might end up there. I knew astrophys' and microbiologists working in an inking factory because they couldn't find jobs in the area.

Yeah, my professor jokes about how a psych major is completely useless. FYL. =[

Why such a snob? Just because you have a degree, it doesn't mean you're elevated to the next echelon of society.

psychs are crazy themself. YDI

#6 and #32 - I don't think the OP was implying that she felt she was above construction work. I think the intention of the FML was to convey that she's chosen a degree with limited job opportunities atm. And when she says 'proudly' - I think it's justifiable to be proud of having a degree. :)

And this is the moment when you realized that you need to go to graduate school and receive your PhD. FYL indeed.

I agree with most of the people here in saying that a Psych major is useless unless you're getting a doctorate.

I could get a degree in psych, and I'm a minor. Not FML worthy.

You knw, i think Becker and Mad Magazine want their joke back.

It's not snobby... if you've spent years at university, spending thousands of pounds or dollars on getting this degree, and come across someone with the same degree working on a job to which generally a degree is not needed, and a job you have no interest in, then it's not what you want for yourself. If that guy is a construction worker because he wants to be, then all the power to him, but it's not everyones cup of tea. But anyway, just getting a degree doesn't ensure you'll get anywhere. You need to take your qualifications, apply them, and continue to work hard until you get to where you want to be... And to the people that say psych is an easy degree, you have no idea what you're talking about. Psych degrees involve, sociology, biology, neuroscience, statistics and philosophy...
