Blankity Blank

Today, I finally got to conduct my first questioning of a suspect, who had been arrested in connection with a car theft. As I recited the Miranda warning to him, my mind went totally blank, and after a few seconds, he sarcastically continued the speech for me. FML

I find it hilarious that he knows it well enough to recite under pressure yet its your job to remember it and you mindblanked.

Don't worry, the first patient I ever treated as a first responder, I forgot ALL the questions I needed ask him until the ambulance turned up. Everybody has it happen sometimes, especially when you're nervous.

That's why you read it from the card, son, each and every time. That way when some defense lawyer tries to say that you accidentally skipped something, you pull the card out of your wallet and say, "Sorry, but I read it off this here card." Learned that advice in the policer academy in the 70s, followed it until I retired,

I don't think all departments require the use of a Miranda card though, so some might not think of using one. But I fully agree! I also agree with police cars having cameras and officers having cameras on their person in case there is any question about the events that transpired. Sorry, tangent...

Clearly he has more experience in these matters

that's what you get for having that job!!

I wouldn't worry about it the fact that he can recite it to you says two things: 1.) he's been in trouble that often & 2.) he obviously knows and understands his rights

maybe you should practice with him

Try singing Soft kitty, Warm kitty, Little ball of fur. Happy kitty, Sleepy kitty, Purr, purr, purr.

A lot of departments have their deputies and officers carry Miranda warnings written on card in English and Spanish. Sort of a means to cover your ass if the person you're arresting tries to say they weren't informed. Even through Miranda V. Arizona is really well known case law, thanks to television romanticising law enforcement Sorry to hear you were so nervous OP! I hope you can build more confidence. Being visibly nervous can be dangerous for a cop.

I don't even understand how police officers have trouble remembering it. I'm a sixteen year old girl and I know it all. Just feel like I should say this: I've had no problems with the law..

you should have been like 'you have the right to suck my dick'
