Crying

By The poor bees - 02/02/2025 09:00 - United States - Richmond

Today, I went to a gathering at a friend's place. He had a bottle of "mead", which I tried and loved. Only after drinking two glasses did I learn that "mead" is made from honey. Eight years of dedicated veganism down the drain. FML

As KittyKatGirl says, honey should be acceptable to vegans. For the point she made about zero harm, zero exploitation and the fact that you have to keep the bees happy for them to stay but also because taking the old honey they don't use is actually helpful to the hive. Beekeeping is almost a symbiosis and completely different from 'farming' them. Plus the bee population is in decline, by not supporting it you are contributing to said decline and therefore harming them. Please do some research and have a serious think about allowing honey in your life. Also, decent Mead is ******* delicious and very, very easy to make for yourself.

How did you not know what mead is made from? I would think a "dedicated vegan" would at least confirm what is in a drink before consuming it.

Feel sorry for you, but at least Honey is one of the more , if not the most animal friendly 'animal product' you can get. There is pretty much no way to keep a bee swarm where they are not happy, so if they arent happy, they can AND do, flee.

As others are pointing out, I don't think consuming honey is really harmful to anyone or anything. But even if we assume it is, years of having a positive impact is not negated by one mistake, nor are any positive impacts you have going forward.

jesus dude, it was an accident. you didn’t throw anything down the drain. you’re fine. pick yourself up and move on

Here's the thing about the bees, as others have said: If they were discontent with their living conditions in apiaries - Including the honey being gathered from their hives, there is literally nothing stopping them from just leaving. Sure, it's not "consenting to give their honey" to the beekeepers in a way that equates to a human consenting to exchange labour for money, for instance. But the bees aren't being held captive in any way. And, all told, the protection humans give to their hive boxes likely reduce the risk of deliberate predation by bears, etc. by a significant margin, so surplus food is traded for better rates of grub survival and whatnot.

Since it does seem to cause you distress, do yourself a favour and be absolutely certain when it comes to trying new foods. Ask the host. Pull out your phone and do a quick check on wikipedia (don't rely on AI and its predictive text fill-in-the-blank models). If you can't confirm, consider it better to pass up something than to accidentally ingest something you morally object to. But, also: Don't consider yourself tainted/horrible/etc. for an accidental slip-up. Absolute insistence on purity is not great for the mental health. There's no such thing as vegan-hell, and accidentally consuming something you don't believe you should is not a vegan-Deadly-Sin that will get you banished there.

Doesn't sound very dedicated, to consume stuff without knowing its origin. YDI
