Don't make me choose

By Ames - 23/05/2009 16:07 - United States

Today, after being diagnosed with cat allergies, I explained to my cat-loving boyfriend that the doctor strongly recommended not allowing the cat in the bedroom. At 1:30 a.m. my boyfriend got out of the bed to go sleep in the spare room because, "the cat is sad." FML

Never make someone choose between you and the pet they probably had before they knew you, and who will still love them after your relationship ends. Either take some antihistimines and deal with it, or accept defeat now.

That's pretty harsh but I wouldn't call this a FML unless he continually gets out of bed in the middle of the night to sleep with the cat.

There's nothing hotter than a guy who loves and respects animals. My cat was unwell lately and my bf got up several times during the night to check on her, made me respect him so much. If he would do this for his cat imagine how much he'll care for you when you're sad.

Hey!! Guys, cats do get lonely. Some happen to like sleeping with people. And besides, if he cares that much for the cat he must care tons about you. I mean seriously, your not the one who can't sleep with him anymore....

Your boyfriend is awesome; cats > women.

Dude, I would stay w him. People should show compassion for animals. The cat was kicked out and forced to sleep alone (which I'm assuming would be new to it). It's fine, just watch to make sure he doesn't care more about that cat than you.

You know, maybe he just wanted to do that for a few nights to ease the cat into a new routine (aka, not sleeping in the bedroom with them). People are so quick to judge...

I think you need a new boyfriend. He shouldn't be such a selfish person and want to sleep with cats. And what guy with any testicles likes cats?!

for those of you telling the OP to get allergy medications, those stop working after a while. i know because my mom can't have any pets -- her allergist told her that the allergy medications would stop working after a while if she was living with them, and it also doesn't matter how well they're groomed if it's the fur or dander. if i pet a well-groomed cat, i still start sneezing and my eyes get puffy and itchy (without allergy meds). i think the OP was not unreasonable in her request not to let the cat sleep in the bedroom; after all, her boyfriend still has the cat. i also think that the boyfriend misses having the cat in the bedroom. what he did is ok for one night, but longer than a week and i'd dump him if he can't respect your health.
