Dumb it down

By alejandro38 - This FML is from back in 2010 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I had an interview. I didn't get the job because apparently customers might not understand me, since I "talk too good." I just graduated with an English degree. FML

Maybe you offended the interviewer with your fancy jargon and flashy degree. Reach for new goals! Although, with an English degree, there isn't much hope.

Actually, an English degree is very versatile. It can be used in almost all lines of work. It basically teaches you how to think well. You learn critical thinking skills, analytical skills, communication skills, and the ability to read and write well. All of the above are an important foundation for any career. The rest is just training, which most jobs do anyways.

wow. y'all are mean. there's nothing useless about an English degree. people are stupid. she was obviously quoting the guy she had an interview with. duh!!

Ouch! That really sucks! I have an English degree as well.

It's probably better that you weren't hired. If the others talk just as badly or worse, your head may explode one day while you're on the job.

Eh, down where I'm from, good english is not very common. Sadly, I'm a grammar nazi. Coming from a town named Hinkley might not be the best :/ I feel your pain.

"...might not be the best" Any self-respecting grammar Nazi would have put a qualifier after best. You should try something like "might not be the best thing".

You're a Grammar Nazi? Then the Fuhrer would so displeased with you.

I think that is a coverup for his prejudice against spaniards.

I once had a customer threaten to stab me for that exact reason after I tried to explain a contest to him and why I couldn't just look in the computer to see if his kid won. it was probably one of the better compliments I've had at work. :-D

if u can't talk to ppl then u r useless.! think about it a dr don't go telling patients useless medical terminology. they change it up so they can relate. so ydi cuz for being smart u aren't that smart to realize that u don't go talking like that to everyone

Or did you ever consider that perhaps the original poster did not necessarily use exceptionally obfuscatory oratory, but rather slightly enhanced vocabulary (such as this current example) so that his interview gave a ruse of making him appear more intellectually equipped than he really was?
