Get counting

Today, as my 12-hour shift was about to finish, a young boy came in wanting to buy a $200 gaming device. His mom said he was purchasing it with his own money, which I found admirable. That is, until he took his piggy bank out of his backpack. FML

There's a saying "never feel lazy to count money, you'll suffer if you do"

Please don't tell me it was Monopoly money. Or worse... coins *shudders*

That is completely ridiculous I wouldn't have taken it unless it was rolled

You are allowed to refuse unrolled change in large amounts, and I would say that $200 is definitely a scenario where it's acceptable to refuse. Sure, it is fantastic that a kid persevered and saved that long for something he really wanted, but like has been said before it was extremely inconsiderate of his mother to expect you to count all of that, especially since there is probably no way in hell that many coins would ever fit into your till, and especially if they came into the store very close to closing time.

Look on the bright side, at 12 hours, you were not only earning overtime but you should feel good that you made a kid happy while simultaneously helping him learn a life lesson.

With all that change, he might leave a tip!

Awe, that's so cute, sorry you had to go through that but it's cool of the kid.

I would pretend to be one of those people who can just look at a pile of coins and know how much is there, and then assume he has enough. if he doesn't there's always someone else to blame it on

Nothing wrong with that. You should have helped his self esteem even more by praising his thriftiness and working so hard to save for what you want. Also gonna add that a lot of people would benefit from this instead of racking up credit cards

well part of your job is counting money right? that kids doing what everyone should do. work hard, save money, spend money.

I feel your pain Op.. To count $200 in change!!! and if it's not all there, count it AGAIN!!! and that too at the end of a 12 Hour shift? Maybe you could've called a colleague who started their shift or had done less hours than you. FYL if you have to work with unhelpful people.
