I hate this job

Today, I forced myself into work with severe laryngitis. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, except I work at candy and ice cream store at a major tourist destination. For seven hours I had to communicate with unsympathetic adults and screaming, bratty kids by miming and using a dry erase board. FML

Quite giving the OP grief, I have worked in the food service industry before and very few managers will care if your arm is loped off. If you start missing work you are quickly replaced, it doesn't matter to them if it was legitimate or not (especially in this economy). The best he could hope for was that they send him home early, which they didn't so obviously they didn't care.

In which case the boss would be in the wrong for allowing a contagious member of staff to handle food! OP should have gone sick.. end of. They risked infecting possibly hundreds of people!

OP, I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me last year. Hope your boss was as kind as mine was and supplied you with frozen treats to ease the pain.

oh myyyy....haha. that sucks. feel better

For people saying she should have taken the day off, maybe OP can't afford to. It's likely that she needs money for gas, rent, food, school, etc.

This person probably couldn't afford the sick day, or had coworkers who weren't able to cover for her. In the retail food industry, they'll replace you in a heartbeat if you take sick too often. She probably has bills to pay, hence the "forcing myself into work". As for the whiteboard, if the laryngitis is that bad that's probably your only way to communicate. Get better soon dude.

Tough titty if you can't afford the sick days. That's still no reason to risk public health.

Hopefully it's viral laryngitis and not bacterial laryngitis.

#105 that makes no difference, if it's viral OP probably has a cold/flu which would be contagious. The people may not get laryngitis but they would get the cold that gave OP laryngitis. Viral laryngitis is a symptom more than an illness in itself which is why it's not considered contagious, the cause still is though.

Sucks for you, but some days you really should just stay home. It's possible that the adults were unsympathetic because it looked like someone who was visibly contagious was handling their food and their children's food.

You probably should have taken a day off to recover somewhat but even so I'm impressed you still tried to work. Feel better OP.
