Ironic, isn't it?

Today, my father's company shut down his branch, leaving him without a job. This is followed by a letter from my school's financial aid office, saying I'm not getting a penny because my family's income level is too high. FML

You can appeal by showing proof that your dad lost his job. Happened to me.

Yeah write them a letter explaining things.

#1 said it right. do an appeal.

This might be the first FML I've read that is actually worthy of the moniker "FML". You certainly have more of a right to say it than idiots who dented their laptops. I feel you, bro, no ****.

um yeah, i feel your pain, i'm going through the same thing right now. the government is BULLSHIT when it comes to student aid. FYL!

to number #13...everyone has to apply for financial aid, it's called the FAFSA. They determine how much your family should be able to pay towards your schooling out of pocket based on last years taxes. It's bullshit, they just assume you have tens of thousands of dollars just lying around.

I feel ya. my dad was an investment loan officer for 35 years..now hes unemployed and were ******.

Last year, my father lost his job and couldn't find a new job. Basically because my mother makes the larger amount of money in the marriage, my school wouldn't give me any money either. It sucks, but when you are an alum start giving money to the school for people who are like you.

@58- you're another ignorant person that believes deporting illegal immigrants will make our economy so much better, and open up the door to these amazing jobs that we've all always wanted. You're stupid for thinking such. OP- sucks for you, but I believe there are many people who deserve financial aid a bit more. Consider the people who's parents have been unemployed for months/years. The money should go to them first, then you. Welcome to the reality that most Americans have been faced with for a while now. Unemployment is a huge problem right now, but get in line behind the thousands of other people seeking help.

Actually, you can get a ton of extra grants on your own if your parents refuse to help you pay for college. BUT your parents have to sign a form from FAFSA and send it in. Its one page - not difficult. But if you have a spiteful mom like I have, its difficult - she refused to sign it, saying they wouldn't want her to sign it, because signing it would be helping me pay for college, and therefore she'd be lying if she signed saying she wasn't going to help pay for college. (my sophomore year I went to her house when she wasn't there to get her tax return because she wouldn't give to me, I also came across some cash while looking for it, and figured while hey....) Your financial aid isn't supposed to pay for your entire tuition. You are expected to get loans, and the amount you are given is based on the amount your parents can get through the PLUS loan - thats how I got burned really badly with my mom refusing to fill out that form and I didn't know her SS number to forge it myself. The plus loan is at a better interest rate than you can get yourself, but only your parents can take it out. Depending on what you want to go to major in, some of the best schools in the country have tuition that is only $5,000/year, not including housing. An excellent degree from a school that only has an excellent degree program in that area, is better than a degree from a well known school in an area that the school isn't a toprunner in

Happened to me last year... contact the financial aid office with proof.
