Today, I found out that shutting off the heat in the rental property my parents owned was a bad idea. The water froze and the pipes burst, causing the whole kitchen ceiling to fall down. The water ruined the wood floors and the appliances. I turned off the heat to save money. FML

it's perfectly fine to shut off the heat but you need to remember to shut off the water and drain the pipes. FYI for future reference, though I don't think they'll ever let you be responsible for it again.

No, but it is common knowledge to turn off the water and drain the pipes before turning off the heat in the winter.

OMG guys! Why would you leave the faucet dripping? That's wasting water, right? And water has bills, right? And that would be pointless, right? Because you wouldn't save money, right? Dang everyone is spoiled. Or maybe I'm just stupid. Probably the second.

The second. It doesn't have to be a steady steam, just a slow drip. That little amount of water is a hell of a lot less expensive than replacing ruptured pipes.

Where I used to live the water bill was a fixed price each month.

what's with all the damn "water pipes freezing and bursting" shit

Water expands and is trapped in the pipe, dummy.
