By HELP - This FML is from back in 2012 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I moved into a new house. The landlord insists it's OK for her to come up whenever she wants because she owns the house. We aren't allowed to lock the doors and she has two 8-year-olds. They come into the bathroom every time they hear the shower running. We have a clear shower curtain. FML

No. No it's not okay. If I'm not mistaken that's illegal for her to do.

Put a chair in front of the door. That will keep them out. It's not a lock...

Hate people like that. Sure it's their building but they should be giving you guys privacy. Looks like you should have asked about their rules before signing. I agree with person above. Put chair under doorknob ;) and buy new curtains. FYL for having weird landlords. Plus why would they wanna come up to you guys? Are they that lonely.

You're renting the house, but you can't lock your doors? **** that. It's a little thing called privacy. I wouldn't want anyone walking up in my home whenever they feel the need. Either tell her how it has to be, or find a new house. I'm sure if you broke the lease another rental would be completely understanding of why.

Check your lease contract. If she didn't write any of these asinine stipulations in it, you have a legal reason to tell her and her kids to stop coming into your home.

I had a landlord put something like that in the lease. But there's a law here in New York that even if it's in the lease, you can't do anything illegal. It is, in fact, illegal to enter a tenant's rented property without 48 hours written notice. It's called breaking and entering even if you own the property. You can imagine when we came home to find her in the apartment and called the police she wasn't too happy...

At least you had enough sense to call the cops- I'm sure a lot of people don't. In Arizona, it's generally the same rule, 48 hours notice- unless otherwise stipulated.

20- hahaha. Ah, people amaze me with their stupidity sometimes. (meaning your landlord..)

It has to be an emergency for them to go in without notice and the burden of proof is on them to prove it was an emergency. She was a nosey old Canadian woman and her son was the maintenance guy. We just found out last week that her son was arrested last month for felony 2nd degree strangulation and 3rd degree assault on our old downstairs neighbors for not letting him in without notice. I told my husband we were lucky we left when we did. We had so many problems with those people it's unreal.

41- Yikes, that's crazy. You're definitely lucky to have gotten out of that mess. Kudos to you for knowing your rights. :)

I lend and I can't imagine doing and expecting something so stupid! Nice treating your customers is a basic rule. OP get the hell out of there and find normal people not some assholes..

Put a bear trap or something in front of your door... They won't expect that. just kiddin' :D but seriously though, your landlord's ****** up...

ChickInGreenVans 12

Still like the bear trap idea better though..

the bear trap would be appropriate, but also illegal. Google mantrap legality

My dog used to barge in on me in the shower. Her 8-year-olds are poorly trained.

I think your landlord has a problem with keeping the nose out of your private life. She has no right to ask you to keep the doors open all the time it's your private life. If you can't even go to the bathroom without locking the door I'd say move out.

pinkpixie06 11

Is that even legal?! And it will be her own fault if her kids are scarred for life due to something they see in your shower! You SHOULD have the right to live your life in your home.

Well now, that is just an immature way of handling things. Oh, I could be wrong but with how uptight the landlord is, bet OP isn't allowed to have animals.

I think it's time to seriously consider a lifestyle change, and become a nudist. If your landlord doesn't like it, show her the door... naked.

unknown_user5566 26

35- The image I got in my mind of this situation was super funny. This could backfire though; if the landlord is so lonely that they want to invade OP's privacy, maybe they would like the nudity... eesh.

If you are allowing this, its all your own fault, there are laws against that kind of landlord-tenant abuse, and it is abuse.

unknown_user5566 26

It is not OP's fault. The landlord is being an ass. Most of the time, breaking the lease results in thousands of dollars that needs to be paid. That's why I suggested checking the lease contract; if these "rights" are not stated explicitly, OP can get out without having to pay any fees.

While it might not be OP's fault that the landlord is being an ass, it IS OP's fault that they put up with it and don't stand their ground. OP is entitled to privacy, and there are indeed laws that protect them from abuse of LLs right of entry (which is for the purpose of repairs, showing the property to prospective buyers/tenants, inspections, etc., and NOT just for coming in and snooping around whenever they want). And no, if they are in a lease, you can't normally break the lease for this reason without stiff penalties.

unknown_user5566 26

48- I agree with you, and I wish OP would realize what their rights are; but you have to remember that paying large fees for breaking a lease isn't an option for most people in the current state of the economy.

The only loophole I can think of is; If the landlord was smart enough to put it in the lease, then SHE can enter the property without warning. But her children are minors, and cannot enter without her being with them. In a sense, she broke her own contract.
