Cats, there's no rhyme or reason 🤷 Give lots of treats and nip and you will be forgiven.
I hate to be this person, but laser pointers aren't great toys for cats in the first place. They're great to redirect away from things (like the front door or your food), but they should be replaced by a real toy. Cats are hunters, and they can never "catch" the little red dot, so more often than not, they get extremely frustrated and vent it on the rest of your house. It's really better to get them a tangible toy like a feather on a stick. This is a generalization and every cat is different, so not discounting anyone's experience to the contrary, but in general laser pointers should not be used for the entire toy experience.
My cats quickly figured out that I was controlling the pointer. They really enjoyed running around after it. One of them often came and asked me to use the laser and make him run on the walls.
Well, since it's just a laser pointer, you can probably return it. It's not like it's a toy the cat chewed on or something.
