I know that some assholes are probably going to say the whole "Blood is thicker than water," quote, and that is actually a wrong quote. To them, I say the actual quote, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," meaning that the relationships you forge by choice are stronger than those by family. And OP, I'm sorry they were such jerks. The fact that it disappointed you that much is a good thing.

My SO's parents gave him up when he was 7 weeks old because they were too addicted to partying, drugs, and alcohol. His paternal grandparents adopted him and he was much happier

I'm sorry to hear that OP, you deserve better. I don't know how you feel but I do know that you will never be like him just because you look the same. I don't know what their reasons to give you up were, but they don't seem like good people and maybe you were lucky to be away from such idiots. I hope you feel better!

Mate, you now know that you were better off being given away. Your life obviously has been much better and you can go to your real parents give them a hug, thank them and forget about the people who you knew for no longer than a day and expected you to pay them off. You are a good person and that is clearly shown by the fact that you were fighting back tears. Chin up mate, remember everything happens for a reason and most of the time for the better ^__^
