Today, I had a violent coughing fit while at the store, which caused a lady to think I was choking, grab me from behind and start doing the Heimlich maneuver incorrectly. She broke two of my ribs. FML

True, but the Hemmlich is done to get the person choking to cough. OP was already coughing so that lady should have never started the Hemmlich maneuver.

It's lawsuit time! you're not supposed to anything if the person can breathe, cough or talk. that's the one single thing I remember from high school first aid class.

what I want to know is, we've got a medical emergency here & doc didn't weigh in at all! I read all those long-ass posts waiting for a reply somewhere and he totally let us down. maybe he was taping up those broken ribs tonight?

That's why you are not supposed to administer the Heimlich without the persons consent!

This is a common misconception. Heimlich maneuver should be used only after the victim is no longer successfully coughing.
