Today, I checked my bank account that I've been saving money in since I was a kid for college. I have $100 left out of the $10,000 I had last month. Apparently my parents thought buying a pool and an HDTV for themselves was more important than my college education. FML

Today, I found out why my parents have been trying to convince me not to go to college this year. I also found out where the $20,000 they just spent on landscaping came from. My college fund. Which is now $0. FML

Today, I frantically told my parents that my bank account had no money. Turns out, they took the $1,600 I had saved up from a summer job and invested it in penny-stocks. I was grounded because they were "doing it for the family," and I'm being selfish. They also had lost it all in a matter of days. FML

Today, I was worried because it's July and I still haven't found a summer job, despite applying to 50 places. It was fine, because I remembered my savings account. I told my parents. Instead of being relieved, they said they're going to take the money from me for being lazy, and using it for my tuition, despite promising to pay for it. FML

Today, I found my checking and savings account to both read $0.00. My parents transferred all my money to theirs because "I'm irresponsible, and not fit to handle money." I'm a 3.8 college student and have a full-time job. They are currently unemployed. FML

Today, I found out that my parents used all of the college money I have been saving up for 8 years to buy a beach house. The reason they waited until now to tell me? A tree fell on it, and they need more money for repairs. FML

Today, my mother asked me if she could borrow $200. Being the lovely daughter I am, I gave her my bank card to withdraw it herself. She gambled it away and maxed my bank account out. I had $1500 saved. FML

That really ought to be illegal. You get screwed if your parents don't meet their financial aid obligations for your education, so there should be some legal requirement for your parents to meet those obligations.

Pft, If they had access to your bank account that means that chances are they are the ones responsible for it (as in it's under their name and credit). I say go on a shopping spree and let them deal with the fees for spending too much. You deserve SOMETHING out of it. And if the account was under your name, I say you threaten them with legal action if they don't wanna pay up. Sure, they're your parents but it's either that or end up working a minimum wage job since you couldn't go to college :-/. Or be in debt for 10 years of your life for interest rates from loans... Either way it looks like you have the upper hand.

how many people here actually had bank accounts when they were under 18? because when you're under 18, you need your parents signature to withdraw money and they can withdraw your money on their own, because they're your guardians. therefore, the OP would have no control over the parents access to the account.

everyone saying YDI it for letting the parents into his account- i believe that is required, but even if it's not, i mean, parents should be able to be trusted with it...and not steal from it...
