Today, I introduced my girlfriend to my parents. My mother turned to me and said, "Wait you're actually gay? I thought you were just saying that to piss off your father." I came out to her when I was 16, and have confided in her about my past relationships. FML

Today, I introduced my girlfriend to my family for the first time. My mother's immediate reaction was, "We didn't know you were gay!" No mom, she really is a girl. FML

Today, I finally let my parents meet a boyfriend of mine for the first time ever. My dad mentioned how he was happy to finally meet him, because for the past 4 years he'd thought I was gay. FML

Today, I came out as lesbian and introduced my new girlfriend to my family. My mom angrily told me that I should have waited until my grandparents had died before coming out, and that I was "extremely disrespectful" for making this announcement. I honestly thought everyone would be fine with it. FML

Today, I came out to my mom. I had an epic speech planned, and when I tried to tell her, it all fell apart and I started crying and just said, "I'm gay." After a few seconds silence, my mom sighs and says, "Duh." FML

Casual homophobia

Today, I came out to my parents and siblings as gay. They were very accepting and asked me why I waited until I was 25 to do so. I didn't have the heart to tell them it was their own homophobic remarks that kept me closeted since I realized it at 14, and that a previous coming-out to a parent was dismissed as 'a phase'. FML

Today, I finally got the courage to tell my parents that I'm gay. My mom said "Yeah, we know." When I asked how they knew, my dad, without looking up from the tv, said, "We've been monitoring your Internet history." FML

Today, I told my mom that I’m a lesbian. She was fine with it, supported me 100%, and it was a huge relief, until she followed up with, “Until you find a husband, then you’ll obviously have to stop all that.” The reason I even told her is because my girlfriend just proposed to me, and we’re engaged. FML

Even if it's not biological, liking something is never a choice. It's like, why do you like a certain type of food? Because it's sweet? well why do you like sweet foods? It's not like you say "I choose to like apples and not pears." It's just something that is. Either you do or you don't. And regarding sexuality as a sin... Well, typically aren't most sins about things that create pain and hatred? For example, stealing. If you steal something from someone, you're making a choice that will most likely inflict some kind of emotional pain on them. Homosexuality, on the other hand, does no such thing. It's talking about love. How could God hate someone for loving someone? It just doesn't sound like something God would have a problem with. Remember, some parts of the Bible were written solely by men on their observations. These observations were made thousands of years ago. Isn't it safe to say that some of these observations don't apply to the present? Anyway, I hope you got something from that. All I'm asking is for a little understanding and compassion between human beings.

I have to say its annoying that as soon as being gay is mentioned in the FML post all of the comments turn to a debate about the morality of homosexuality (btw, I am a gay-rights supporter so don't think I'm hating or anything). If the FML had been "my mom thought I was gay and was surprised I was straight" there wouldn't be this much drama going on. So all of the people who are automatically saying "YDI" just b/c the OP is gay need to stfu and maybe start commenting on the actual content of the FML post. *rolls eyes* OP - I'm sorry you're mom didn't believe you. I hope one day she and the rest of your family accept you for who you are. :)
