This guy obviously missed the first day of medical school where we're told to LISTEN TO THE PATIENT. Seriously, if I shut up and listen, 80% of the time the patient tells ME what they have, either directly or indirectly. This guy is an egotistical ass who is practicing medicine from the 60's when patients knew much less.
That's a very dangerous mindset. I might get downvoted for saying this, but as the character from House always says, "The patient always lies". I am not saying I believe that quote because of the show (I actually don't like the series), but because I've dealt with liars when it comes to fixing computers or just dealing with customers at work. Me: "Did you install anything off the internet?" Person: "No, of course not! I'm not stupid!" Me: "Ok, just checking. Alright, let's see... Wait, what's this Antivirus 2013 Professional that I'm seeing?" Person: "Oh, that's just a program I downloaded off the internet a few days ago. It found 15 viruses! I just need to pay them $34.95 to remove it but I keep putting it off." Me: "*obscene thoughts*" --------------- Customer: "Yo, why the hell isn't this machine accepting my credit card?" Me: "You just need to hit the credit card button on the very left side of the screen." Customer: "I DID THAT ALREADY!" Me: *touch credit card button on very left side* Machine: "Thank you! Please take your bags and get out of my store" Me: "*obscene thoughts*" So yeah, if patients are like my customers/people that I deal with on a daily basis, then they are liars and morons and should be ignored for the most part.
Reciting quotes from medical television shows (and very poor ones, at that) and applying them to your rationalizing process as if they're legitimate facts is FAR more dangerous than a doctor who factors in patient feedback during the diagnostic process.
Doc is right, 57. If a doctor can't listen to their patients, then they have no business practicing medicine. If a doctor ever tells me that I don't know what I'm talking about, then I tell them the same thing, leave, and find another doctor. Nobody knows your body better than you, and there are many doctors out there who forget that simple fact.
#57 That's silly. First of all, your patient is the computer, not the person who owns the computer. The computer told you that its owner downloaded something. Second of all, despite the fact that you seemingly think that the doc shouldn't listen to the patient, you ask the owner of the computer questions anyway. Doc said that patients will tell him the issue either directly or indirectly 80% of the time. He's not accepting the patients word as the absolute truth, he is simply listening to what they have to say. How is listening a dangerous mindset?
Glad you chimed in, Doc! Every practitioner should listen to their patient; you learn so much just by listening.
Im gonna have to disagree to a small bit of your comment and risk being thumbed down. Doctors should definitely listen to their patients.. hands down. That's what we're being taught from day one in college. But I'm sure the doctor listened to all of OPs ailments and only disregarded her self diagnosis. Chest pain is NOT a symptom of pneumonia in any case. The doctor should suspect pneumonia if the patient is coughing, coughing blood or having trouble breathing and continue from there. But i do disagree with his rudeness, he probably should've explained why it wasn't pneumonia. Doctors do meet a lot of people who self diagnose and most of them get upset that their diagnoses right or hasn't been further investigated.
Thefish - I hope you aren't a doctor. I really do. 1) Chest pain can DEFINITELY be a symptom of pneumonia. Look up pleurisy, pleuritic chest pain, etc. 2) Coughing blood is NOT associated with pneumonia. It's usually a sign of TB or cancers. 3) For the most part I am NOT referring to patients who say "I have xyz". I am talking about listening to their history and then connecting the dots before examining them.
Chest pain is not a symptom of pneumonia in any case? Good lord what medical school did YOU go to? I can assure you, thefish, chest pain is DEFINITELY a symptom of pneumonia. I won't thrill you with any fancy reasons why I know this... Try google:
bad wording from my part.. coughing blood= purulent secretions with blood in them. although not an indication but may definitely present with as symptom. Pleuritic chest pain and chest pain generally are two different things. If OP said, I had pain in my chest everytime i breathed in then i would definitely call the doctor an idiot for not investigating it further. The way i read the FML, OP seemed upset that the doctor didn't further investigate her self diagnosis ("suggested it could be pneumonia") and that she truly believes that the doctor's diagnosis was wrong and hers was right ("..claiming i had acid reflux"). I think the doctor could've taken an excellent history, she never said he wasn't attentive or that he dismissed any details. The only wrong thing I see here was that he was rude. I don't know what the diagnosis is, but i highly doubt it's really pneumonia. She doesn't have any other major symptoms (dyspnoea, cough, fever). it's FYL for his rudeness, but not so much his diagnosis. It could very well be acid reflux.
125, OP stated the pain was coming from her lungs. Meaning it hurt for her to breath.
Maybe.. but not necessarily. If i have pain coming from the right side and feels like its under my breast, I would probably describe it as pain in my right lung. I just doubt it is pleuritic chest pain since it seems like such a huge thing to ignore and instead diagnose a GIT problem. I think it's more likely OP thinks that such pain cannot be from acid reflux and the doctor is an idiot for even claiming that it could be. In reality, it very well could be acid reflux.
They call I what doctors a practice for a reason. None of them know exactly what they're doing. You are your own best advocate.
"They call I what doctors a practice for a reason." Are you sure YOU know what you are doing?
Unfortunately, with the internet and health care cost issues, so many people DO 'self-diagnose' themselves. While I agree the doc could've said what he said a bit better, he had a valid point. Even if one has had the same health problem before, it's never safe to assume it's the same every time. I tell my patients the same thing. Winky RN.
i looked up common cold symptoms that i had, and google told me i have cancer. so the internet can be a little redundant as far as diagnosing health problems.
Hmmmm
I don't really see how this is an FML unless you actually do have pneumonia. Otherwise your doctor is just a jerk, but not necessarily wrong.
What a vivid username.
That's not acid reflux.... I've had it before. So much so that it went into my lungs, which caused difficulty breathing laying down and some agitation to the lungs, but after coughing it up for a few hours and taking antibiotics, I was fine. It bothers the esophagus more than anything, normally. You should probably see a different doctor, because I bet u hav something else.

Sounds like you should look for a new doctor...
Go to another doctor for a second opinion!
