Today, after the longest time, I went to the gym. I ran and ran and ran on the treadmill for an eternity, beating myself up for getting so overweight. Then I tripped and fell off, sweating and sobbing for being so useless. When I looked up, I saw I'd been on the machine for barely 2 minutes. FML

Today, I joined a gym. I’m overweight and not very athletic, so I was nervous. I looked around and tried a treadmill. I start walking at a chill pace, then got ambitious and cranked it to a "light jog." Within seconds, I tripped, fell, and sent the emergency stop button flying across the room. The gym staff ran over and I swear someone said, “Well, at least he’s trying.” FML

Soon those two minutes will turn into twenty. You are putting the effort in, which is more than a lot of people can say for themselves.

Don't worry about being overweight and going to the gym. At least people can see you are actively trying to pursue a goal. Keep your head up OP! :)

Next time, I advise taking it slow... Slowly work yourself to a nice jog and then you can run for a little bit and just feel out how you best exercise.

I'd say you're doing a good job. You're putting in twice the effort most are. Just keep in mind that miracles are just another name for hard work.

Hi, I'm in the same situation as you. I'm overweight, even fat, middle-aged, and for thirty years I couldn't do any jogging. Eventually I asked a sports coach, and he helped me understand why : I was taking it too fast and my heart and breath and muscles weren't up to the task. He told me to begin really slowly, barely faster than walking at first. It worked. I think you want to take it too fast. You need to find your own pace. It doesn't matter if you're not as fast as the others (you're actually faster than you think) or as fast as you'd like to. Just aim for the comfort-zone pace at first. You'll improve slowly. These things take time.

You're doing great, OP. Treadmills take a lot of energy, work your way up to it at your own pace. Don't give up! It's wonderful that you're getting active.

Why the hell does this get so many YDI's? This is exactly the bully mentality people show when they mock people, because they are overweight and then... mock them in the gym, because they don't have the miracle body we all like to see. Idiots.

Dont feel pressure, keep working and you'll get better. The hardest part is starting.

On the flip side...that's 2 minutes more of running than you did yesterday. Gotta start somewhere.

OP, try music. my girlfriend told me why she does it while we work out: listen to 5 songs and 20 minutes is already up

that's exactly how I was when I started. now, I'm in the best shape I could possibly be in. went from couldn't even run a mile to being able to run multiple 5K races a year and I even won for my age group. keep you head up. your FML family has your back
