Today, at work, I was helping someone who really sounded like she had a Boston accent. So, I asked her where she was from. She has never been out of state. Turns out she has a speech impediment. FML

I worked in customer service over the phone and had a lady ask what country I was in. I told her I was from Washington state and she didn't believe me. It happens. And I don't even have a speech impediment

don't feel embarrass. I have a speech impediment due to hearing loss and people have always asked me where I'm from. Doesn't bother me one bit

Honest mistake, OP. Generally retail requires some amount of small talk and it sounds like you were just trying to be polite and friendly. It happens.

Can't you just go oh cool, I'm from "blank" and act like it was a conversation starter?

Yeaaaah. Boston totally sounds like a speech impediment. I live in Massachusetts and I HATE the Boston accent. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

That sucks wicked bad. Boston accents are wicked pissa.

I've had a bit of an 'accent' my whole life that makes me sound like I'm from anywhere but where I live; even though I've yet to move once. It happens OP, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a speech impediment, and people ask me this all the time. It gets a little old but I never judge people for asking, it does sound like an accent. You shouldn't feel too bad about it.

I know someone with a speech impediment who feels really upset when people ask where he's from. It's really not appropriate to ask about someone's accent when you don't know whether they have a speech impediment.
