Today, for the 5th day in a row, I had to keep my 7-year-old home from school and search his poop because he "forgot" he's not supposed to swallow things like, in this case, a screw that fell off his scooter. FML

So your kid swallows while your wife doesn't?

What else was he supposed to do with a delicious screw if not eat it?

Sounds to me like he's doing that bc he knows you will let him stay home. Let him go to school anyway and see if he keeps doing that.

Exactly right, 25 and 26. This lazy rat of a kid has been home from school for 5 days now because he keeps swallowing things that are not food. He is being rewarded for ******* up with a vacation so why not keep ******* up to extend the vacation? When I was in elementary school a classmate who was allergic to bee stings deliberately stuck her bare foot in a ground bee's nest so she could get stung and not have to go back to school. If she was willing to do that to avoid school, it's pretty easy to see a kid gulping down a screw to stay out of the classroom. OP, send this little con artist to school and tell him you are going to have the teacher announce to the whole class that she is going to have to search the kid's poop for a screw because he is so stupid he swallowed one and see how fast he begs for mercy. If kids like this put as much thought and effort into their schoolwork as they did in figuring out ways to get out of it, they'd be at the top of the class.

Bankrupt - OOOOR the kid may actually have a psychiatric disorder and habitually swallows foreign bodies. If that's the case, your little public humiliation technique will only make things worse. See what happens when you assume?

In any case, just letting the kid stay home without further addressing the issue isn't going to help.

The fact that the OP put "forgot" in quotations indicates that the OP also believes the kid is ******* up on purpose. The OP knows the kid better than any of us, so going on the OP's belief that this kid is full of shit as well as inanimate objects, I would say this kid deserves to be threatened with a public humiliation. Frankly if this were my kid this wouldn't have lasted 3 days. His screw ******** ass would have been in school. See what happens when you ignore the quotation marks?

If someone's going through those kinds of machinations to avoid going to school, I'd question what their school environment is like. There are kids who have good reason to fear going to school, like an abusive teacher, or bullies, etc. And the parents need to find out whether any of this is going on, and do something about it.

Bzzzzz, sorry bankrupt, you fail again. What OP believes is not necessarily what's going on. It's certainly possible that a relatively innocent 7-year old is swallowing this stuff on purpose to get out of school, but in my experience most 2nd graders still like school. It's also possible that the kid is doing this due to some kind of disorder, and he just said he "forgot" because THAT'S WHAT KIDS SAY. It's also possible that the kid is a dumbass and really did forget. You're completely assuming that the child is doing this just to get out of school. Your suggestion to publicly humiliate him and call him stupid is repulsive and reprehensible, and I feel sorry for your children if this is how you choose to discipline them.

Bzzz, Docbastard, you fail. Really, what is that? Talk like a grown-up. I said "tell him" you were going to embarrass him, not actually do it. The threat of an action is often so effective that the action is not required. Sorry, I thought you were so much smarter than everyone else that you would have gotten that. And if the kid has a psychiatric disorder, don't you think it would have manifested itself in some way other than eating junk in order to get out of school? Most parents aren't as unaware as you seem to think they are. I grew up with abusive parents who, if they saw me get hit by a car, would have calculated how much money they were going to make suing the driver BEFORE they lifted a finger to help me, and even my lazy, disinterested parents would have realized it if a psychiatric disorder had manifested itself in me. I did have a real problem in school one year and faked an illness to get a break. My indifferent mother, who would not have cared if my head was burning up, realized I was faking it because I had a real problem in school and she actually did get off her fat ass and called the school to complain. I am sure the OP cares about this boy way more than my parents cared about me and the OP makes no mention of any problems other than the issue with eating random junk. The mere fact that the OP posted this at all indicates the belief that the kid is essentially sound with the exception of being too lazy to go to school. More often than not the obvious answer is the correct one. "I hate school because it's too much work and interferes with my computer game playing time, so I'll eat a screw because my parent will keep me home to poke through my shit" is the most obvious thought process in a seven-year-old, who is likely to knock it off when threatened with exposure to the opinions he really cares about, his peers.

And yet again you find a way of making the FML about you. You have a nice long history of doing this. It's quite a talent indeed. I fully understood what you said originally, and I'm frankly offended that you assumed otherwise. Threatening him with public humiliation (and calling him stupid - your words, not mine) is simply not ok in any way. There are about 836 better ways to get your point across. I understand your childhood sucked, but for the sake of the future, don't take your frustration out on children. When I have a problem with my daughter, we communicate. She's almost 5 and seems to have more common sense than you.

Well, at least you only need to save up for a community college.

Just because community colleges aren't up to standards with schools such as Harvard, doesn't mean they aren't a decent education.

He probably is doing it to stay home from school... kids are smart

you people are ******* idiots. he gas to make sure the screw makes it out of they have to surgically remove it so it doesn't puncture the GI tract.... morons.

Well there are at least 3 people on here that have some common sense.

mjninety - Yeah, you aren't one of them. Neither is NikkiCat. I have a sneaking suspicion that neither of you are surgeons. Am I right? Assuming the screw has made it past the oesophagus, the chances of it doing any damage are close to nil. Long, thin foreign bodies, like screws, almost always make it through the GI tract without harming the child. Even if it gets lodged somewhere, it usually still doesn't cause problems. Nikki, before you go spouting off about something and calling people idiots and morons, make sure you have some knowledge of the subject. Otherwise you end up looking like the moron.
