Today, I again failed to convince my girlfriend that the $100 in our account is the minimum amount we have keep there to avoid being charged by the bank. We have a joint checking account, and the only way to take her off it is to close the account outright. FML

Hey everyone, I see a lot of people in favor of the "close it outright" option, but of course I forgot to mention that in order to do so, we both have to go in and agree to close it. The only reason didn't do that ages ago is because I haven't come up with a way to convince her it's for the best, and since I DO plan to commit to her, I don't want to upset her.

Opening a joint checking account with someone to whom you are not married is a bit stupid. Opening one with someone who doesn't understand basic banking is downright ludicrous.

Well then, seems like we already have a solution, don't we OP?

So close it and open a new one without her. It's super easy. I did it recently at Wells Fargo. No problem at all.

Can't you change the minimum balance? I did that and it all worked out fine...

Close the account and start your own. It's the only sensible solution.

you should never have a joint account with a boy/girlfriend I'd close the account outright and start a new one at a different bank

Sharing finances with a gf? Pretty daft move.

1.Close account. 2.Dump sucky girlfriend. 3.Cut all ties with her. 4.Open personal account,.Only you can use it. 5.????? 6.PROFIT!

And that's why you go to a bank that has free checking. Letting someone charge you for letting them lend out your money at a profit is crazy!

What crappy bank are you at? You're basically out $100 to keep your account "free". Get a new bank and a free account.

I work at a bank. We still have free checking. Do some research... But I agree. You wouldn't believe the Shit I've seen. If you think this is fml.... Just wait til she ruins your credit. Life could be much much worse for someone stupid enough to combine finances with someone they can't commit to...

i have been with my fiance for 4 years and i let him know from the beginning i didn't want a joint account and even after we are married a joint account is still not a good idea you might as well have her name tattooed on your ass

My husband and I have had a joint account since we were married and it works out just fine. You shouldn't make blanket statements because what's true for you it's true for everyone.
