Today, I asked my boss for a few days off next week, because my grandmother passed away yesterday and I'll need to travel to attend the funeral. His response: "She's dead, you're not. You want time off, then quit." FML

Sorry for your loss, OP. And an insensitive boss like that is a horrible one. I wish you and your family the best.

Sounds like how my work would be.

Tell your boss about FMLA (the Family Medical Leave Act). He can't fire you for going to a family members funeral.

My condolences. Don't quit. Just go to the funeral. You notified your boss that you would be out of town. When you return to work you will find out if you're fired. If you are fired contact all of your local news agencies and tell them your story.

wtf your boss is an ignorant asshole

What a douche! You have the right to bereavement leave. It's not much, though, but a couple of days is better than nothing. Sorry for your loss and best of luck to find a better job.

According to New York State law your employer has to let you leave for a funeral-there is no option for them to say no

That's really insensitive of him, what a jerk! I'm so sorry for your loss OP. Stay strong!

My grandmother died the same day yours did...
