i think this "traditional" concept some people get hung up on has evovled. marriage of course is a decision between the two people however having a man tell the father he wants to take his beautiful daughter and look after her isnt necessarily a bad thing. its a tough transition for some fathers and they usually want to know thier daughters will be loved, provided and cared for, and a respectful man will give that confidence in some way, be it asking for blessing or whatever is appropriate to your situation. so congrats OP on engagement, congrats on being a top bloke and trying to be respectful. sorry it wasnt recieved so gracefully
