Today, I asked my girlfriend's father for permission to take his daughter's hand in marriage. He asked me "Which one?" I said "Uh, the one I'm dating... Lisa." He belched and said, "Yeah sure, throw 'er off a cliff for all I care. Piss off, boy." So much for chivalry. FML

Good on you. Hopefully you don't have to deal with him too much in the future

That was classy to ask for his blessing. It sucks that you may have a classless asshole for a father in law.

Good luck with your marriage ?

For a minute I though he was asking which hand (right or left)..lol, sorry your future father-in-law acted like inbred hillbilly trailer trash...maybe you can get your fiancé away from that & let her see how normal, mannered people behave.

That's the family you want to marry into?

i think this "traditional" concept some people get hung up on has evovled. marriage of course is a decision between the two people however having a man tell the father he wants to take his beautiful daughter and look after her isnt necessarily a bad thing. its a tough transition for some fathers and they usually want to know thier daughters will be loved, provided and cared for, and a respectful man will give that confidence in some way, be it asking for blessing or whatever is appropriate to your situation. so congrats OP on engagement, congrats on being a top bloke and trying to be respectful. sorry it wasnt recieved so gracefully

Chivalry is mostly code of arms in jousting anyway.
