Sweet, I moderated this one!
OP didn't specifically say that they wer joining the Army, they said they were joining the military.
Not at all an FML. It's a reasonable question for them to ask.
They got your ******* attention, didn't they? You probably hadn't thought through the possibilities of getting killed, or, even better, maimed (damaged for life either physically or mentally). They care about you but if they had given you the typical concerned parent speech, you'd have thought that they were a bunch of ******* and you were indestructable. But, with that one snide question, they slapped your stupid ass back into reality.
Maybe OP did know that, they just felt they had a duty, or maybe the military was their calling. Not all troops are idiots that think they can't die, some just want to lay their lives down for YOUR freedom.
GAH, they are NOT fighting for your freedom! When's the last time an Iraqi tried to bridge your civil liberties? OH wait - NEVER. Sorry, this is just one of my greatest pet peeves - people who are all, "GRAH WAR FREEDOM FIGHTERS"
When was the last time a terrorist killed innocent people? TODAY! Maybe YOUR freedom isn't in jeopardy right now, but someone's life is. And what happens when you're freedom IS being threatened? I bet you'll be pretty damn thankful for our troops then.
Just FYI, we're not the freedom police of the world.
#149 Yes, this is a war on Freedom. The war was started because of the September 11th attacks. Those attacks were based on the fact that the people in charge of it just hates Americans and Christians and wanted us to die and others to suffer because we're not Muslim. Therefore it's a holy war. Yes, believe it or not, this does come down to a HOLY WAR. The true origins of the hatred is a holy war. The reasons THEY gave for attacking us, and us retaliating may not have been stated as such, but you gotta read between the lines. THAT'S why this is a war for freedom...a war on terror. The terrorists HATE the fact that we have all the freedoms we do, and if they ever get the chance, they WILL bring the war back over to us. September 11th was the first attack in a war on us, just like when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Believe it or not, countries and politicians, not just ours (and I'm not trying to put ANY of our administrations down, just showing that I know politicians are far from honest) don't tell the people the truth...they tell us what THEY WANT US TO BELIEVE. This does include ALL of our past and PRESENT administrations. So, I'm not saying that one side is right and one side is wrong, but do your own research...don't just listen to one source for your information. Trust me, you'll be very surprised what you find out if you dig deep enough.
I know it really is a war for our freedom. If we weren't fighting them over there, they'd be blowing us up over here. It's a psychological method, if you give in to somebody who isn't going to budge their opinion, even just a little bit, they'll be more open to your idea.
"if you give in to somebody who isn't going to budge their opinion, even just a little bit, they'll be more open to your idea." Could you please explain this statement? Because I have no idea what you're trying to say here.
$400,000 divided up however many times among however many people you choose. You even pick whether they get it in a lump sum or in installments, haha.
In case you were actually wondering, if you sign up for SGLI and make your parents full benificiaries they would get a lump sum of 400,000 or montly payments until they reach the 400k mark (before taxes)
It really depends on how they said it.. whether it was with a smile, a slight chuckle, etc.
don't name them as the beneficiary!
They only get money upon his death if they are the beneficiaries. I am actually beneficiary for my brothers...cuz they are not married & don't have kids. ...I have kids. Or...I know at least one put me down...But he should be about to finish anyway, so I don't have to worry about it. I hope you can enlist...just keep in mind all services are being picky right now b/c they are getting a lot of new recruits due to the economy. Also, be careful about your money while you're single...lots of newly enlisted kids give responsibility to family members thinking they won't screw them...but they do! If you are single & can work it out...sell anything you have to make a payment on! OR, set up your bank account to make auto payments for you...get on with USAA & see if they can assist as well, they're pretty helpful with finances. Put everything in storage with a combination lock if you need to...take care of yourself first, worry about hurting your families feelings last. Good luck.

Well, that is a reasonable question, you are putting your life at stake...
