Today, I asked my parents to sign for me to enlist in the military. They asked me how much money the government gives them if I die. FML

Well, that is a reasonable question, you are putting your life at stake...

If I was in their shoes I would likely say the same thing, honestly. Do something more worthwhile with your life! =(

yeah, they should have asked how much they will win if you get mutilated cause chances are this will happen more likely than just dying. You deserve bastard parents for being an idiot and wanting to go to the army. :)

you have a higher chance of dyeing driving to the recruiter than to be in the front lines

Without hearing the context, I'd have to say it sounds like your parents were being greedy and selfish. It is a legitimate question but it could sound really inappropriate depending on when and how they asked. In any case, thank you for your service to the country, and I hope your parents' question ends up being moot.

Tell em 5 mi$$ion each!! That'll get em to sign, which is all you want. Once you're in the service, you never have to see them again! Oh, and you get to pick who your insurance beneficiaries are, it doesn't automatically go to them.

It depends on how much you pay but if you pay for the full coverage its $400,000.

good on you to want to join the military. I did 6 years myself. best years of my life

my parents asked this same thing when I enlisted :) but they were kidding!
