Today, I called my mom from Australia. I have been abroad for two months and hadn't talked to her in a long time. A few minutes into the conversation my moms stops me and says this call must cost a fortune and hangs up on me. A few bucks in more important to her then me. FML

Weren't you calling her? She was just probably wanting you to save your money for the trip.

The last sentence just ruined this one for me. Quit crying. And it's "than" not "then".

Um, your mother isn't trying to save "a few bucks." Overseas calls are actually really expensive. When my brother went to London for a semester we couldn't call him at all - we emailed him a lot, though. Next time you want to talk to your mom try something that's free - if you absolutely have to hear her voice, get Skype. And if you're one of those people who can't get too far away from home for too long without getting really homesick, you shouldn't have gone to Australia.

We have an international flatrate for exactly that reason. My dad moved from the US to Germany a LONG time ago and that's when my grandma got that flatrate. I moved in with her from Germany a few years ago and now the flatrate comes in handy like you wouldn't believe.

Um, weren't you the one who called her? She was trying to save YOU the money.

In one of the most retarded months of my life, I wasted $800 on overseas calls. Yes, over the course of ONE MONTH. It was 40 cents a minute. And it obviously wasn't worth it. Really, your mom does have your best interests in mind here. 40 cents doesn't seem like that much money. Then you see the phone bill and have a heart attack. Stop bitching that your mom is saving you money. Like other people have said, use the internet.

Use Skype. If you travel abroad you should know what it is.
