Today, I corrected someone who spelled "learned" as "learnt" on my favorite forum. Nothing could've prepared me for the torrent of abuse that followed from the non-American members. Now I'm banned for "trolling," and all my 7,000+ posts since 2006 are gone forever. FML

sorry op, that suck, learnt looks obviously mispelled for anyone who does not know that language and they should have just told you instead of being jerks about it, and for everyone leaving evil comments and saying ydi, let's let karma get YOU, fyl op.

I'm probably one of the few people who feel bad for you. When I see the word 'learnt' I do think it's spelled incorrectly because I was taught 'learned'. You shouldn't judge somebody, or call them ignorant, because they don't know the opposite way to spell it. Because as stated before, it depends how you say it. I'm not one to comment on people's grammar though, unless it's atrocious. But as an American, I see non American-English words all the time and I just try to figure out what it means. Not all English speakers know the differences for each version of the language, because the English language has a lot of versions to it. Okay, sorry for the rant. I just don't understand how people can call him ignorant or stupid. Just because you learned it a different way doesn't mean you're ignorant.

You have a point, however in this case it would've been possible for the OP to have quickly googled it to double check - most people might not know all the varients, but most know there are differences - before making herself look like an arse. Besides, it does get irritating when something repeatedly gets corrected for something that is not only correct, but you've already explained why it is correct.

Only 7k posts since 06? That's nothing. On another forum, I got banned for posting an ascii art of a hot chick's cleavage. I had over 22,000 posts

Never correct "learnt" to "learned. You totally deserved it for thinking everyone spelled things the American way. When in reality, the British version is actually the correct version. So, technically, it's "learnt." Either way is accepted.
