I'm probably one of the few people who feel bad for you. When I see the word 'learnt' I do think it's spelled incorrectly because I was taught 'learned'. You shouldn't judge somebody, or call them ignorant, because they don't know the opposite way to spell it. Because as stated before, it depends how you say it. I'm not one to comment on people's grammar though, unless it's atrocious. But as an American, I see non American-English words all the time and I just try to figure out what it means. Not all English speakers know the differences for each version of the language, because the English language has a lot of versions to it. Okay, sorry for the rant. I just don't understand how people can call him ignorant or stupid. Just because you learned it a different way doesn't mean you're ignorant.
You have a point, however in this case it would've been possible for the OP to have quickly googled it to double check - most people might not know all the varients, but most know there are differences - before making herself look like an arse. Besides, it does get irritating when something repeatedly gets corrected for something that is not only correct, but you've already explained why it is correct.
