Today, I corrected someone who spelled "learned" as "learnt" on my favorite forum. Nothing could've prepared me for the torrent of abuse that followed from the non-American members. Now I'm banned for "trolling," and all my 7,000+ posts since 2006 are gone forever. FML

You've stayed on the same site since 2006?! Maybe they did you good, branch out a bit and don't let the Internet suck you in.

"Learnt" is a verb, while "learned" is an adjective.

Actually, they are both past tense forms of the verb 'learn'. Those of us that studied in places that use the Queen's English were always taught to use learnt. The first time I encountered learned was while reading and American book.

The difference is whether "learn" is considered a strong or a weak verb. The U.S. has a preference for weak verbs, probably because they're easier to conjugate. :-)

Technically Major_General is correct, or at least that's what I was always taught at school in the UK. What he doesn't take into account however is that in the US 'learned' is a verb.

To every grammar Nazi I challenge you to conjugate 'lay' and 'lie' without looking it up. If you cant do it then STFU.

I'm sorry but how is this an FML?? You did it you pay the consequences. They might not have taken it how you wanted but still.

I would say they are the people trolling...so you didn't know a word. I think the other 6,999 people got and understood your mistake after the first person commented. Use common sense people, not all that difficult.

I believe you've misread the post. She did not receive 7,000+ replies to her comment. I do know what you were trying to say and I agree. In this comments section, the first few posts pointed out the difference in British vs American spelling (although OP implied she has learnt that lesson). I can't comprehend why there are so many more comments explaining the difference on which she was already flamed.

Weird.... Everyone corrects everyone when they comment on the FML's all the time and it is so annoying because it has nothing to do with commenting on an FML!

Learnt is a word. It means the same as learned. It's in the dictionary.
