Today, I decided to get in shape for swimsuit season, so I went to the gym. I tried to lift a barbell up and over my head, which was fine, until I dropped it. Exercise earned me a concussion and a neck brace. FML

No, stupidity earned you a concussion and a neck brace. If you are ignorant about potentially dangerous activities, learn about them before you attempt them.

Maybe get a spotter to help you and start with a smaller weight?

That's why you do not push yourself too hard, especially when you're just starting out.

Is lifting barbells above your head normal? I don't lift or exercise like that so I really don't know. It sounds dangerous either way.

The barbell shouldn't be right on top of your head but slightly behind or in front of your head.

It's a Crossfit thing. Side note: Crossfit is stupid and dangerous.

Don't try to lift more than you know you can

Exercise is great but you need to pace yourself OP.
