I had one escape and we thought he had died... We moved houses and found him 6 months later in the new house running around. I don't know how he survived so long. But put him back in his cage and he kept living.

I like how everyone assumes an escaped hamster can't live like wild mice and find food and water in a house for 4 years. maybe he found it after 4 years cause it recently died and he could smell it. I think everyone just wanted to call the OP dirty :P
