Today, I found out that, although I have the same job title and complete the same work as my male colleagues, I get paid 15% less, purely because I'm a girl. FML

I think you should do 15 percent less work from now on

And you've talked to your boss about this?

Maybe cause they have worked there longer? Im not buying that your boss actually said that...if this really happened you should get a lawyer though

The Equal Pay Act came into force in 1975. The Discrimination Act arrived later, 1984 I think. Your employer is breaking laws that have been in place for decades, if this is in fact the reason for your lower pay. If you have some, check with your female colleagues to see if they have the same problem. If they do, it is likely sex-based discrimination and you should report them to the authorities. If not, there is likely another reason for your lower pay. Speak with your employer to determine the cause.

Same title =/= Same output, Same schooling, or even the same agreed salary. Maybe you have a lower pay and its a COINCIDENCE that you are also a female, not a direct cause.

if all the males are paid more i think its safe to say her assumptions are correct.

For all we know, her female colleagues may have the same pay as the female as well (if she has any). There is a really big chance that the lower salary is directed at HER as a person, not at her gender.

I'm sorry, I meant her female colleagues can have the same pay as her male colleagues, and she alone is the only one with docked pay.

do you not think OP would have checked?

You honestly have no idea how easy it is to jump to a conclusion where there is a perfectly logical (and legal) reason why it happened.

Correlation isn't necessarily causation. Here are some valid reasons for paying you less: 1) You have less schooling than they do 2) They've been working longer/have more specific experience than you 3) Their work output is better than yours 4) They negotiated higher pay 5) They are higher up the pay band for the position than you None of those involve sexism, so find out for sure before you jump all over your boss/HR.

We have equal opportunity employment in the US. There is a state law in Wisconsin that is trumped by the national law that women can be paid less because "men need money more". So my mom who was a single mom of 2 kids and the sole breadwinner needs less money than anyone born with a dick, because of male birth rights? Women should not be treated as inferiors. I'd check your laws in the UK and get your money's worth!

its most definately illegal here. the only thing that can determine wage differences is long service and heirarchy

monnanon 13

haha yes so i did. sorry about that :)

Take it to the Supreme Court and press discrimination charges.

They have a Supreme Court in the UK?? Recall the author is not American.

A quick Google search brings up a Wikipedia page titled "Supreme Court of the United Kingdom". It appears they do, in fact, have one.

Maybe your company's salary is affected by years of service?

you need to talk to your boss about this
