Today, I frantically told my parents that my bank account had no money. Turns out, they took the $1,600 I had saved up from a summer job and invested it in penny-stocks. I was grounded because they were "doing it for the family," and I'm being selfish. They also had lost it all in a matter of days. FML

How did they get access to your account? And doesn't the bank notify you when you take out a large amount of money? Your parents are ****** up and should be paying you back for their stupidity.

That sucks, OP. Maybe you can get them to pay you back eventually ):

What the hell is it with people allowing their parents access to their bank account!?!?!?!!?!?!!?!?! My husband & I were orphaned from a young age. Is this parental practice common. I've seen similar posts about parents accessing their son or daughter bank account.

I'm so sorry that you were orphaned. But yes, in the US in most states children can't own anything, including money. Bank accounts require that parents be listed as the owners and the children can only deposit money until they turn 18. So in the end the law says the parents were okay doing what they did even though it's morally wrong

That was so stupid of them, but aye, you have proven to yourself that you can earn money and save it! Let's just hope they're decent enough to re pay their debts.

At least your not jack Johnson his parents took 20 million from him now he's bankrupt

Exactly why I have a bank account in a separate bank from my rents that they don't know about

Similar thing happened to me, but mum bought and Iphone 6 and said that I'd get it eventually ...

Hmm. parents accessing an account that is not their own. taking funds without permission. i think there are at least 2 criminal charges here. I'd ****'em and go to the police.... even if you drop the charges a few days later, the scare should wake them up and if it is not get, out and never go back. (minor sub thought. if the shares did do well, what are the chances you would have seen your cash again.)

If my parents stole my savings I'd say, "give me the keys to your car. you can have it back when you pay me back." Or I'd call the cops. one way, I'd get my money.
