Today, I got a tattoo of the snake and staff medical symbol on my wrist. Now everyone keeps asking what illness I have; they think it's a medical bracelet substitute. FML

Calaraphea tells us more.

OP here. I didn't expect it to be noted as a medical bracelet substitute. It's very artsy and colourful; it also has a date underneath so I didn't expect people to think it was due to an illness.

well since the tattoo signifies so much meaning to you, then you'll hopefully have no regrets. it just seems that misconception of others will live you the rest of your life. just something you gotta deal with, but I'm sure the tattoo was worth it in the end.

Sounds like you should get another tattoo underneath that one that says, "Anyone ignorant enough to think this is a medical bracelet doesn't deserve an explanation." Then any time someone asks, you can just point to your wrist for the answer.

...or, you could just explain it to them. That works too. But how do a snake and staff end up looking anything like a medical bracelet? Sounds like the tattoo artist wasn't very...artistic.

The caduceus (snake and staff) is present on medical alert bracelets so everyone knows it's not just a piece of personal jewelry. I'm a nurse-I want to have "DNR" tattooed across my chest when I make that decision, just so there's absolutely no confusion.

As a nurse I'm sure that you know that a tattoo isn't legally binding. You could have changed your mind since getting the tattoo. Legal paperwork and letting your family know your wishes is the only correct way to do it.

Why don't people just get tattoos on their upper arms or chests?? Saves a lot of trouble.

Possibly because they already have tattoos there, or don't want any there. The beauty of a tattoo is that one can get it whereever they goddamn well want to.

Yeah, good luck trying to find a professional job then.

128 that's cute that you think people with lower arm tattoos can't get professional jobs. Everyone I know with lower arm tattoos maintain excellent careers and happy lives. Open your mind, kid.

128-As far as I'm concerned, a trauma surgeon is a professional job.

Get the symbol for gonorrhea on the other wrist

Well you got it knowing what it means so you can't complain

Just explain it. After a while all your friends will know. And it's always some conversation starter; at least you have something interesting to say after this question.

I respect the idea, I'm going to school as a paramedic and I plan on doing the same type if tattoo on my side

You do have an illness: Trendyitis hipstericus, a mass psychological disorder where people permanently alter their bodies in a futile attempt to seem cool. Just learn the lyrics to all of Nikki Minaj's songs and you'll be fine.

and this is why you are considered ignorant to anyone over the age of 18.

Well you could always make it more ornate, Maybe not a whole sleeve if you don't want that, but something else to frame it could make it more decorative, and obvious it's just a tatoo.
