YDI for being stupid.
So if you got the gender wrong but weren't aware that there was question to begin with, I'd be on your side here. But you were clearly very conscious of the gender confusion before you said anything, so you could easily have been discreet and left off the last word there. "Thank you very much" would have been perfectly acceptable, regardless of gender, and if you got the job you could always clarify later.
