Today, I had a serious allergic reaction to the food I ate at a Chinese restaurant that supposedly didn't contain peanuts. According to my waitress, peanut oil "doesn't count". FML

Yeah, too bad he wasn't at a McDonald's (or any other AMERICAN chain for that matter) so there goes THAT. Even more so since this is not a fast food restaurant like the above listed. If you have an allergic reaction to anything because of something similar to this FML, I'll be sure to say "YDI, dumbass. Does the FDA approve THAT?!"

oh for fuc*s sake! Another moron heard from. The FDA does not require the use of vegetable oil. Most restaurants have volunteered to use non-animal-fat derived oils, inasmuch as they are not trans-fat. And the reason they did the switch for not because of Government regulation, but our of pure public-driven market pressure for healthier foods. The needs to be a FML section for teens only.

maybe there needs to be a section for up themselves old folk too.

you should sue or threaten to do so or they give you free food.

giantsfan15- I was unaware that you could eat peanuts if you were allergic to them, lol.

I'm not one for suing but this is one occasion where you should. Restaurants prepare food and they have an obligation to make sure that it doesn't harm you. If you didn't tell them you they could not have known but the fact that you did makes them responsible for what happened to you. Food safety isn't something to joke around with and if you don't understand that you have no business working in a restaurant.

Peanut oil doesn't count, unless it's refined improperly. The allergens are in the proteins, oil is all fat.

But there can be suspended impurities of proteins. And just a trace amount can set off someone's allergy.

Yeah, note the "unless refined improperly".

A young waitress, not a chef, a waitress most likely doesn't know what's in all the foods. You could never possibly know all that, so I can't make a judgement on this one, because it seems like a very unfortunate coincidence

Yeah, well if the OP lets the waitress know about his food allergies, it's her duty to inform the kitchen so that they don't allow the food to come in contact with the allergen. It's definitely still her fault.

technically some peanut oil DOESN'T count. the proteins that are responsible for the allergic reaction aren't contained in some peanut oils
