No guilt trip, nothing, just all about her, and you just wanted her to know. Then you make sure that one of her friends *knows* the story about how your friend ****** you over. If you don't know her friends, tell someone with a really big ******* mouth who will get righteously angry and be sure to tell the girl. THEN...you talk with the girl again and say, 'Hey...listen, I never meant for that to get out. Soandso found out about it (hell even fake talk on your phone within hearing of her friends! get it out that way) and, I didn't want you to know because I didn't want your prom to be anything less than the perfectly special day it should be for you. Because that's what you deserve. I can't justify what douchebag did, and I could never do that to a friend, but when I look in your eyes...I know why he took that chance. Betcha $10 you'll have that prom date. ;)

ok... for all you people saying "maybe the friend didn't know?" Don't you think he would only have a best friend be the one distracting the girl? If it was me, i wouldnt just have some random friend do it. If it was his best friend i'm pretty sure he would have known the guy's plan about asking the girl and therefore knew why he had to distract her. And even if it wasn't a best friend, don't you think the friend would have at least asked why he was supposed to be distracting her? and even if he didnt ask why, if he had any brain at all he would have at least realized that something was up between the guy and they girl if he wanted her to be distracted for a little bit.
