Today, I learned that my new parakeet hates her reflection, and will screech loudly day and night unless I take the mirror out. My other parakeet loves the mirror and constantly cries out when I remove it. I can't win. FML

Get them separate cages or a cage with a bottom and top level that one only has access to.

That's quite a predicament you see your self in..

My bird loves talking to his reflection in his mirror! It's so cute!

It's because he thinks it's another real bird, not just a reflection. Just watch out, if you notice him trying to feed or mate with his reflection, it would probably be a good time to remove the mirror. It can make them go insane.

Actually many animals are capable of recognizing themselves in reflections, some birds will use a mirror to preen just like a human, looking for things they can't otherwise see on themselves. Not remembering which species do that, of course, probably not typical pets.

To, 109. It's true. But many of the smaller birds don't recognize that it is their reflection. I think some members of the corvidae family and the psittacidae family (crows and parrots) do, but usually birds don't recognize their reflections. It's more often monkeys and dolphins.

I feel like parakeet #1 when I have pretty roommates.

Separate cages is probably your best bet...

Kill the one you like less. Sophie's choice!

Maybe it's time for a family meeting

One would love it, and the other would be hell-bent on making sure they get back together. Comedy gold! Why isn't someone already making a sitcom out of this? This shit just writes itself!

This spring: Two lovebirds. One mirror. Lots of laug-SCREECHSEREEECH

Take the new parakeet back to where you brought it from and tell them it wasn't working out? Or like everyone else has suggested, separate cages.
