Today, I learned that when the power goes out at my house, my family thinks you can no longer flush the toilet. FML

if you have a well it won't.. I live in mn and when we get snow storms the power goes out so our toilet is basically a port-a-potty :P eww

At my home when we lose power we also lose water which results in not being able to flush the toilet when the power is out.

If you are on a pump system you can't. There is no way for the pump to work without electricity. Where I live we leave rain barrels out because the power frequently goes out. We just haul in a bucket of water from the rain barrel and pour the water in. It flushes it fine. However if you are on a city system and don't rely on a well or a pump then you can. You just don't have hot water.

If you have an electric pump you can't. We have well water and an electric pump. No electricity, no potty.

In some cases that's actually true/right.

sometimes you can't. if you get well water you get one flush and that's it
