definitly why you keep backups... Just a matter of time before the HDD dies on its own.
I'd say this is both of your faults. He should have told you that he was going to wipe the hard drive and asked if anything important was on your computer. You should have had back-ups. I don't think you could accidentally erase a hard drive. He should have known better.
