Pretty normal for people to want a fence in their garden and if they don't build it soon as they move in it'd be more awkward when, say a year down the line they suddenly put one up

I live in Salt Lake City, everyone has a fence here. We still socialize with our neighbors just fine and regularly, we just don't go into each other's back yard unless we are invited or retrieving a ball.

Maybe they want privacy? I'm not saying you invaded their privacy by talking to them and I highly doubt that they built it because of you.

It's very likely they just wanted a fence in their backyard for other reasons. Maybe they like the added privacy, maybe they're getting a dog.
