Did you take the soup from my dad's pantry? My dad seems to believe that no food can ever go bad, especially if it's in a can. That's why I buy my own food now.
#38, 44, and 48 are all correct. A can of soup really does not expire unless the can is not sealed properly. It will not hurt you. The OP is a liar either because; none of this ever happened, it happened but he never got sick, or he looked at the expiration date and THEN decided he felt sick. If the last is the case, it's psychosomatic and the OP is a drama queen.
I check expiration dates at my friends houses now too-I went to my friends house and had chocolate milk that tasted funny, and my friend said she didn't want any so only I was drinking it-and it smelled horrible but I didn't question it until I pulled out the cartoon for a second glass of chocolate milk-it had expired almost a month ago. :[ nothing compared to 12 years but I think you should be able to notice when eating the food that something is weird about it. D:< check your food!
If it smelled and tasted horrible, why would you go back for a second glass? You must be a glutton for punishment.
Haha. That's ace. I also don't believe it for a moment. There's no way that you couldn't have seen the deteriorated quality of the can or the off-taste of the food, nor should the food poisoning have (typically) set in that fast. Unless you're either the most unlucky or dopey person I've met in recent memory, this didn't happen.
"Today, after waiting 12 YEARS our daughter finally stole the can of expired tomato soup that we've been wanting to get rid of."
It was 12 years old? Why haven't your parents gotten rid of it by now?
Sorry, double post....
I also agree with the few people on here who have explained that a can of tomato soup would still be safe to eat as long as the integrity of the can has not been compromised, i.e. no dents, or bulges. The soup was probably canned using a pressure canner, under high heat, to sterilize it. The microorganism associated with incorrectly canned foods is Clostridium botulinum. The symptoms associated with botulism, vertigo, double or blurred vision, loss of reflex to light, difficulty in swallowing. speaking, and breathing, dry mouth, weakness, respiratory paralysis, appear 12-36 hours after ingesting contaminated food. This would make it quite difficult for the OP to post an FML.

Oh damn. Didn't it have a smell of some sort?
Dude...the FIRST thing I check with canned food from anywhere is the expiration date. YDI for assuming everything in your parents' house is edible. We have canned/boxed food in this house from 10 years ago that my boyfriends' mom won't throw away cause "it's a waste of food", yet she won't eat it herself.
