Today, I overheard my co-workers talking about how they don't need flu shots because everyone else gets them. These people are in the medical industry. FML

I have a mild egg allergy, and since I had a severe anaphylactic reaction years ago to something I didn't even know I was allergic to, I've always been leery of the flu vaccine. I keep myself healthy, and my immune system must be pretty strong since I've had one minor cold in the last 5 years. Been an RN for 35 years, all of them in direct patient care.

You can get the vaccine broken into smaller bits for an anaphylactic level egg allergy if the vaccine uses egg. One of my friends had to do that when her daughter was getting vaccinated because of that level of egg allergy.

True, but when I had the anaphylactic reaction it was to a med I wasn't even taking and had never taken in the past-I inhaled a small amount of the powder prior to reconstituting it. Ten minutes later I couldn't breathe, and wound up intubated. So, you understand my caution regarding the flu vaccine.

They have taken off the warning for egg allergy in the past couple of years. You can get the flu shot with an egg allergy.

No they don't, and parents with autistic children would like people saying that sort of stuff because: 1. It is not true, vaccinations do not cause autism. 2. It's causing a negative attitude towards autism. Yes, people with autism require heaps of help, however, they should not be alienated from society because people are scared of getting autism from a vaccine.

That research has been refuted. Please do some research before you spout things that are very dangerous and potentially harmful to the population

It's all coincidental evidence, and even then there's not enough solidity to it to raise any suspicions. It's all an urban myth made up by über-crunchy moms.

Actually it's from a single fraudelent paper in a medical journal that got picked up as 'fact' by the media.

Damn. Time for a career change for them, maybe?

the fact that shots are given to avoid the little inconvenience of being sick for a week is horrible. people don't understand that sooner or later the virus will keep mutating into something that can't be fixed with a shot. I'm not saying it's not good to get all your immunizations, but the flu shot in particular is doing more harm than good.

"...to avoid the little inconvenience of being sick for a week..." The flu /kills people/. Several thousand of them a year. It's not a little inconvenience, or a cold or hay fever. "...sooner or later the virus will keep mutating into something that can't be fixed..." There is no evidence seen by epidemiologists that flu shots are changing the way in which the flu virus mutates /every year/. The virus mutates, every year, from places that aren't getting widespread vaccines. "...the flu shot in particular is doing more harm than good..." Actual scientific evidence says otherwise.

It keeps mutating, which renders the flu shot useless. The only reason flu shots are so popular is because of the fear that it is more deadly than it is. Eventually, there will be no cure for the flu thanks to all these new vaccinations for it.

That is....just not true. And for immune compromised people like myself, the flu is not just a "mild inconvenience". It can cause hospitalizations and death. The flu kills more people every year than shark attacks. In 2004, 48,000 people DIED.

you do realize that one way to prevent the flu is literally to be around people who have been vaccinated, please read a book for once.

the irony... I know how it feels like..I am I n medical industry too..

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you aren't. But hey, I've been wrong before.

that's fine.. but it's true that just because ppl are in medical industry that does not exclude them from being stupid...

They're putting too much trust in herd immunity.

They're not wrong. I work in the medical field.

Technically they're not wrong. HOWEVER, herd immunity is supposed to be for those allergic to vaccines, too young to get vaccines, or that have some sort of immune disorder. If those who can get the vaccine don't, herd immunity is compromised because monkey see, monkey do! If one person who's healthy enough to get it doesn't, their friends might decide not to, and then their friends, and so on, killing herd immunity.

well scientifically speaking if enough people around you are getting it then the virus becomes weaker and you have a less likely chance to get it

aaaand i see that everyone else has already said the same thing. should probably read the comments before posting lol
