hey thanks for the comments guys. to answer a few questions neither the kid nor the parent knew he was allergic. aparently he reacted to the red food coloring which caused him to break out in a full body rash the poor little guy was so upset. but now we know he isn't allergic to all ice cream so I told him and the mom they will have free ice cream on me for the rest of the year... as long as it doesn't have red dye! Thanks to all who commented, Cheers!

Poor kid! Don't feel too guilty though - it was really sweet and from now on the kid knows of the severe allergy and will hopefully make sure he knows that ingredient is not in whatever food he gets, free or not.

My parents had a fun time figuring out I was allergic to red food dye when I was a kid. I am 30 now and to this day it makes me turn bright red. Primarily my face, but its been worse at times. I spent some of my teen years being stubborn and eating Swedish Fish candy almost every day for lunch. I looked like I was blushing most of the time. Looking back I was not the most clever of teens...
My very best friend is allergic to red 40, and since we both have a sweet tooth I'm always checking the ingredients to make sure there's no red 40 in something, or eating the red M&M's or something. It's a strange allergy, to be sure. Sucks, because Swedish Fish is the ****!
