Today, I started my dream job of being a veterinarian. My first day consisted of having to put down 12 dogs and 5 cats. FML

It's sad I know, but if they were sick or hurt you're still helping them. You have a great job OP, be proud.

I once wanted to be a vet, but the thought of having to put down so many animals turned me away. I realized I made a good decision as even reading this FML makes me cry.

Since I'm currently studying to become a vet, I'm glad I have much to look forward to now, thanks OP.

Vets can try other options instead of euthanasia but depending on the area it doesn't always work. I know of some that don't like to put down healthy animals unless they have an attachment problem with owner (owner moving into nursing home, owner died, etc.) leaving the cat to go into depression, very mean ones that will run up and attack people, etc. They refer people to shelters or rescues instead or contact the places themselves. Managed colonies where the animals get food, water, places for shelter, and can be checked for illnesses can also be tried (they need fixed first though!)

"welcome to the pinnacle of your life! Now go destroy the lives of poor innocent animals..." but seriously, they couldn't make you like check for gingivitis or take some tempuratures?

EXPATION!! Y U NO LIKE REALITY!?!?!?!?!

Whoa. Are you working at an emergency clinic or a shelter? I'd expect a lot of death at those, but if you're just at a regular clinic I feel really bad for you. Either way, I hope your second day goes better!

Yeah but after all that studying and not being a dummy, you didn't know you were in for that?

the correct ratio should be 12 cats and no dogs.

It seems a lot. Is it such a big firm? If it is a shelter, where harmless and innocent and healthy animals are killed on a daily basis, you have to change that. You are responsible. Good luck with the job!

I wanted to be a vet tech, but I can't bare to put animals down.

the technician is not usually the one who actually euthanizes the pet. while there is no law against the veterinarian asking you to administer the drug (in most states), most will not ask you to, since they have to be standing right next to you (by law) while you do it anyway.
