Today, I took a video of a fellow employee doing nothing but watching YouTube videos at work. When I showed the video to my boss, hoping he'd be reprimanded, I got fired for operating video equipment on company grounds. FML

That's brutal. Perhaps anonymity is the way to go.

So, it must be policy not to operate recording equipment on premises right? Was what YouTube watcher doing also against policy? Breaking the rules to show someone else is breaking the rules is such a foolish move. Why not go through proper channels?

I'm appalled at the amount of people saying snitching is wrong. Cowardly mentality. A coworker ******* around on company time could have been impacting OP directly.

I'm appalled that you're condoning op taking a video like a creep. If you think behavior like that is any better than the 'fellow employee' watching youtube vids you got the game eff'd up.

Keyword is could've. Even if it was then OP should've just told his manager, not video taped him. That just tells me he's either looking for props for snitching or he's only telling management to screw his coworker and needs proof.

you people consider anything to be "creepy"

@31 - I didn't say I condone it. Hell, I didn't even mention it. I'm condemning people who are talking negatively about snitching. It takes courage to speak up, anybody can stay silent.

It takes courage to speak up unless your motivations are solely to brown nose and get someone else in trouble.

#39 Yes, I'm sure OP stayed silent taking that video. #42 Preach!!

@42 & 44 - Why are you under the impression that there was malicious intent? I'd be peeved if I were a hard worker and somebody coasted off of my effort. I'm willing to bet OP already confronted the coworker before going to management. Of course, these are just based off *my* assumptions.

Because of the fact that he took the time to sit there and take a video instead of just mentioning it to his manager, and he didn't say it was negatively affecting him at all in the fml, which I doubt he'd leave out.

Having been in the situation before, I can tell you that any coworker slacking off will impact you in one way or another. I was unlucky and ended up being assigned to redo my coworker's work, which was actually more troublesome than doing it right the first time around. Luckily my company's management was on top of things, but I can imagine OP being frustrated enough to act before thinking since his clearly wasn't.

All op had to do was report it to the manager. If the coworker was using a company computer the manager can check browser history and get the proof nedded.

No . Mind your own business . The world would be a better place if in most situations we all did that

Yes, #111, I'm sure everyone who's ever benefited off of that one person who didn't "mind their business" and actually bothered to help are so annoyed. I know you said in most cases, but that's still ludacris. I agree with #21. I've always found it ridiculous that y'all claim "snitches get stitches" when I know, at some point, you've probably done the same. Most likely not the same situation as OP, but that's not the point. I doubt OP thought much about getting props for "snitching" and just wanted some justice. If I was irritated enough over a lazy co-worker, I'd do the same.

Uh, how does that work? Let's see how the world would be if everyone minded their own business all the time. Bank robber: I'll shoot every last one of you if you get in my way! Person: Well, this isn't my problem. *walks out* Then maybe if someone was having a heart attack. Re-think that.

Ew you're that kind of person.. Getting other people in trouble to bring yourself higher up. Glad it backfired on you tbh.

What makes you think OP was trying to better themselves from this? OP could have just been tired of working hard while others only slacked off, or gettig stuck with cleaning up someones half-ass job. You shouldn't be on youtube while working. While I don't agree with OP's way of snitching, I do agree that it should have been brought to the boss's attention. Those who are breaking work policy should be told upon, it's not fair for those who want to actaully be there and do the job properly.

The thing that bothers me about it is, it's not really Op's business what the coworker does. The boss is the boss for a reason, he gets to choose what people he feels deserves to be there and those that don't. I'm sure the boss was aware of what was going on, I bet he'd seen it or heard about it already, and even if he hadn't it's his job to know what goes on. If the coworker's behaviour was directly affecting Op's work then Op should've said something to the coworker first, and if he didn't fix it, then go to the boss and explain that the coworker's work and how he was doing his job was seriously affecting Op's work. Op doesn't even need to explain anything else, it's the boss' job to take care of the issue that Op has raised at that point. What Op did just seemed very over the top to me.
