This Scenario is actually fake and i will explain why. Most motion sensors (including the ones in sinks and automatic door ways) don't actually detect MOTION. They use a special Diode that detects the ambient temperature in front of them. the proximity of a person changes that temperature because of the body heat generated, activating the circuit and turning on the device. A purse could not have activated the sink because it would cause no change in the temperature. While there are sensors that actually do detect motion, they are significantly more expensive and not nearly as cost efficient. This would make them the illogical choice to put in any sink or doorway. This is simply some person trying to get their 15 minute of internet fame... pathetic.
Are you a guy? I'd have to guess so, cuz clearly this has never happened to you before. This FML is not only possible, it's happened to plenty of people before. I've witnessed it happen to women, hell, even I've knocked my backpack into the sink on accident only to have the back of it hosed down. It's not that they detect temperature, I think that would be the most expensive way to go. They detect light, and when it gets dark enough in front of the sensor the faucet turns on. Therefore, if a purse gets knocked into the sink, it's going to come out wet. End of story. True, she should have been more careful with where she put her purse, but it's not her fault it was an auto sink.
Motion sensors detect Infra-Red Radiation, which pretty much means they detect temperature, just like the original poster said. Motion sensors don't detect light because then all of the sinks would go off and waste water when you turned the lights off for the day. If this FML and your story with the backpack actually did happen, it is much more likely that the faucet was set off by the person attempting to retrieve the bag than the bag itself.
You're kind of a dumbass for not paying attention where you were putting your purse, or where you were leaning.YDI for sure.
I hate you.
Wouldn't you have reacted quicker? It just seems weird that your purse "filled" with water. Did you just stand there and stare at it?
Good job einstein!
ok now how is carrying a purse girly and weird? seriously people...
why is everyone calling fake? this has happened to me so many times before. we have those sinks at school and this also happened to me at the airport once. when it happened at the airport, i set it in the sink, not realizing the automatic water.. and when i leaned over the sink it turned on the water and got my purse soaked before it would stop. and at school, it falls in the sink off the ledge which triggers the water. it sucks.

Some FMLs are FMLs because the circumstances are crazy. But I think almost every girl out there dreads this-- bathrooms with no makeup mirror, no shelf above their sink, and not even a coat rack. And we've been told since girlhood that public bathrooms are filthy, to always hang up one's possessions and open the door with a paper towel, so we balance our bags precariously on the edges of our sinks, maybe checking for water droplets in the bowl first just in case it tips and falls in because accidents happen... We take so many precautions, and then find out some jerk restroom designer installed automatic sinks. I'm just waiting for this to happen to me.
GENUIS i tell you!
