Today, I was at the grocery store, waiting in line to pay. A man jumped me from behind, and my first reflex was to brutally elbow him in the face. I soon discovered my attacker was one of the patients at the disability house at which I work, and he was trying to hug me. FML

Should've gone with your second reflex then.

I feel bad for the patient.... He just wanted a hug :(

Fifteen minutes later: "Today, I saw one of my doctors at the grocery store. I ran to give him a hug, as he was my favorite doctor. He elbowed me in the face." FYL and his. /:

Uhhh… hate to be the a-hole as usual, BUT the "doctor" has a female symbol next to the username, and it said "one of the patients" and not "my patient", meaning that OP isn't necessarily a doctor.. Y U NO COMPREHEND READING?

Reading is bad for your metabolism; I read that on Wikipedia. :3

Why is everyone bagging on this guy for his reflexes? My first thought wouldn't be to stop and ask who it was either. That doesn't make any sense. It sucks the guy he elbowed was disabled, dont get me wrong.

thisss. you can't tell if it's someone you know when someone jumps you from behind. I'd do the same thing, elbows are a good weapon and it could have been someone dangerous. I say kudos for having good reflexes.

Exactly! They will most likely save his life if he were to encounter that situation for real. Better safe than sorry!

Aw:/ im so sorry OP. I hope you're okay and so is the patient. :)

OP, although the consequences were horrible I feel that you reacted as any rational person would when the felt attacked without warning. The fact that you ended up hurting a mentally handicapped individual is tragic it is in no way your fault. I broke my little brothers nose when he jumped out at me once, so although the guilt is horrific take comfort in the fact that if anyone were to jump you for real you could drop them like a bag of bricks.
