Today, I was driving on the highway and a cop had his radar gun out. The woman in front of me panics and slams her brakes on, causing me to rear end her. The cop cited me for "tailgating" and I have to pay for the damages on both of our cars. FML

Thats the technical definition of tailgating. If you're so close to the other car that in a situation in which the car in front of you suddenly breaks, and you rear end the car in front of you, that would be tailgating. Really, what do you think tailgating is if its not exactly the situation you're in now?

I cant stand people who slam on their brakes whenever they see a cop. Especially when the dudes on the other side of the highway

What a douchey cop and a careless bitch. I hope karma gets them soon

Radar guns can shoot across to the other side of the highway. Same direction, opposite direction, doesn't matter.

while that maybe true, the cop is not going to come flying from across the highway to ticket you without you doing a significant amount over the speed limit. Therefore its stupid to slam on the breaks when they are on the other side, also it draws attention to you for interrupting the flow of traffic.

It's quite ridic how people slow down like that, it's quite obvious your speeding when he sees you slam on the brakes.

If you rear-end some one, it's legally your fault; for not leaving enough room in the event of an emergency.

@215, obviously she wouldnt have been in an accident had OP not hit her, therefore your argument is ludicrous! OP, sorry for your car but YDI for following to closely or as the ticket states, tailgating. You have to leave a set number of car lengths between you. That number increases as the speed at which you travel increases to allow room for the panicky breaker in front of you to safely hit the breaks. Face it man you F'ed up.

YDI... you were still tailgating if you hit her.

Pay more attention when you're driving.

Hate to say it, but unless she came to a complete stop and that's why you hit her, you were probably tailgating. And speeding. stop breaking the law :D

YDI. At least in MA, you are responsible if you're behind them (unless you can PROVE they backed into you). You're expected to be a good driver and put enough distance that even if an essential part of their car drops and they come to a sudden stop, you can stop in time. While the woman wasn't a good driver, you clearly weren't either as you HIT HER. Drive better.

The thing about MA though is that we all still suck at driving

Telling ya, cops were the cause of most fender-bender accidents I've seen on highways! >_
